About Us

Almost five years ago,  Anomaly was born as an internet talk show (AKA a podcast). Its creators, Jen and Angela, had but two goals in mind: to have fun and to offer a feminine perspective on all things considered geeky. Anomaly, and Anomaly Supplemental’s topics are centered on science, science fiction and fantasy books, movies, and television but also include: comics, video games, costuming, renaissance festivals, conventions, theatre and geek culture. Recently, the show has evolved into a community comprising two shows, a successful blog, and a growing forum.

Anomaly: Something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected; an oddity, peculiarity, irregularity, inconsistency, incongruity, a rarity.

The term “Anomaly”, as it is used in this community, was originally coined by Jen and Angela. They use the descriptor to set themselves apart from the stereotypes that are  typically associated with geeks. Anomalies are women who do not allow themselves to be stuffed into pigeonholes. Anomalies are not living in their mothers’ basements. Neither are they scantily-clad gaming sirens created in the dreams of equally stigmatized geek males. Anomalies are unique. They are mothers, wives, girlfriends, singles, doctors, punk rockers, actors, editors, dancers, designers, athletes, mathematicians, lawyers, roboticists, missionaries, daycare workers, teachers, students, knitters, bloggers, homemakers, etc. They are capable women with diverse backgrounds and hobbies that stretch beyond the socially awkward. They, as Anomalies, are socially functional fan gals with coolness factors that leap off the coolness scale.

This term is reserved for women.  Sorry, men,  you can not have it. But one of your brethren, a fellow Anomaly listener, proposed that you call yourselves “Singularities.”  Singularity: the state of being singular, distinct, peculiar, uncommon or unusual. We Anomalies think it sings. Rock on, our atypical brothers, rock on. You, too, are welcome here.
