Beats answering the phone for five minutes!

Workers at a Preston call centre took time out to watch a teenage X Factor finalist perform.

Janet Devlin, 17, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, appeared in the canteen of Talk Talk, Balcarres Road, Ashton, yesterday.

Dressed in burgundy tights, denim shorts, a jumper and Dr Martens boots, the youngster sang four songs including her X Factor audition ‘Your Song’ by Elton John and ‘Cosmic Love’ by Florence and the Machine.

Before performing her first song, ‘Sleeping Sickness’ by Canadian singer Dallas Green, during which she played the guitar, Janet said: “Probably no-one has ever heard of it but that’s my music unfortunately.”

She also sang ‘I Don’t Love You’ by My Chemical Romance and signed autographs for fans.

Linzi Gallacher, 32, from Ingol, and Natalie Salisbury, 27, from Ashton, were among the dozens of staff who watched the performance.

Linzi said: “She’s got a good voice, it’s original. I thought it was really good.”

Natalie said: “It’s a good opportunity to see someone you probably wouldn’t get to see. She has got a unique voice. I really liked the last song (Cosmic Love) and the audition song.”

Janet was the fourth X Factor finalist the pair had seen perform at the call centre, following Diana Vickers, Jamie ‘Afro’ Archer and Paije Richardson.

Speaking after leaving the show on Sunday, Janet said: “What I sing and what music I like is not the X Factor. What I bring to my own music is the music that I like, which is quite underground.”

Axed Janet Devlin shrugged off her departure saying rival Misha B deserved to stay because she is “more X Factor material”.

The singer said her exit was “not some huge bloody deal”. She added: “It’s not the end of life. Music never stops.”

The teenager, from Omagh, Northern Ireland, said her creativity had been stifled on TV and claimed she had held back her real talent because she was saving it for fans who came to her gigs.

She said: “I wish we would get more of an opportunity to be musicians and express our artistry.”

Janet, who was accused of being too predictable by Gary Barlow, claimed the music she preferred was too alternative for the show. “What I bring is the music that I like, which is quite underground,” she said.

Student Janet forgot the words to the Hanson’s Nineties’ hit MMMBop on Saturday, claiming she felt sick. Her second song — Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Under The Bridge — was not enough to save her from the axe on Sunday.

More than 14million viewers watched Sunday’s results show.

Janet ‘The Devlinator’ Devlin finally met her match on Sunday’s X Factor. After coming a cropper with Hanson’s ‘MMMBop’ in Guilty Pleasures week, the Northern Irish teenager was given the chop by the judges last night (November 27).

One of 2011′s most popular X Factor acts as well as one of the most divisive, Digital Spy caught up with Janet to discuss her musical tastes, her excitement at leaving the reality show and her real feelings for Kelly Rowland.

You said last night that you were excited about leaving the show. Do you still feel like that?
“Yeah, I’m really excited. Now is really the future, isn’t it? You’ve got to start working hard and begin building your own future now.”

Jessie J suggested last night that it was the right time for you to leave because the show wasn’t suiting your style. Do you agree with that?
“Yes, I think the week that I’ve left, week 8, is brilliant. I’ve had enough time to get my name out and it’s been a great platform. But it also means that I might not always be associated with The X Factor and that I can get my music across and people can appreciate it without thinking of the association with a TV show. Hopefully, people will think of me as my own person.”

Was it hard for you to blend together your alternative musical taste and style with appearing on X Factor?
“It was hard for me in the sense that the songs I like aren’t pop. They are either rock or underground, folk or unheard of. Whenever your favourite songs are like that it’s quite hard because you can’t sing any of them. You have to understand when you’re on a show like that you have to sing songs that are known. People at home don’t want to be bored to death by songs they don’t even know. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and I’ve still done songs that I like and that’s alright.”

Were you pleased that for your last Saturday performance you got to sing a song by one of your favourite bands?
“Definitely, my last live performances being Chili Peppers and Snow Patrol was the perfect way to leave in my opinion.”

Janet Devlin Booted Off The Show As Kelly Rowland Abstains From Voting

X Factor judge Kelly Rowland was forced to wave goodbye to one of her “star” girls, as both Misha B and Janet Devlin were placed in the bottom two.

The Destiny’s Child singer broke down into tears as the show’s host Dermot O’Leary asked her to make a decision between her girls. Unable to choose, Kelly abstained from voting, forcing Janet Devlin out of the competition.

Choking up Kelly said: “I know how great these two young ladies are… Janet I know how much you want it… I absolutely love you and adore you.”

She continued: “To be honest I can’t make this decision… I have to pass it”, meaning the decision of who was to leave the show was based on Louis and Tulisa’s majority vote, which was to send flame-haired Janet home.

However, Kelly seemed more upset about the outcome than Janet, who – after hearing the news she was being axed – said: “I can’t wait to get out of this show and work on my music.”

Kelly congratulated her, and said: “Her first audition will go down in history as one of the most show-stopping ever… everyone needs to keep a look out for this girl, she’s a star.”
