Installation FAQ/The Fine Print:

Is There a Demo of Dada Mail Available? I would like to test drive the program out before I commit to a paid installation.

There is, see:

demo.dadamailproject.com

I'm a Web Developer/Web Designer. Can I work directly with you for My client's Needs?

Yes.

Please contact us directly if you think you can supply a somewhat steady stream of installations. We will be happy to give special incentives to such partners.

I don't know if I meet the requirements for Dada Mail to run on my server account. How would I know?

For us to do an installation, please make sure your account meets the following:

  • The ability to run CGI scripts.
  • Hosted on a Unix-like server. These include: FreeBSD, Linux, MacOSX. This does not include Windows NT, 2000, 2003.
  • At least Perl 5.8.1
  • cronjob/scheduled tasks support. Although not required for the core of the program, we highly recommend it. Cronjobs are required for the Scheduled Mailer (Beatitude) to work.

Complete system requirements are listed here and we do have a list of Dada Mail-friendly hosts if you're having trouble deciding on a new host.

If you are unsure on how to find this information, you may want to email your webhost and see if they have the resources available for Dada Mail. For example:

Hello,

I am interested installing a custom CGI script on my account.
It has the following requirements to meet:

* Hosted on a Unix/Linux server (not a Windows-based server)

* The ability to run custom CGI scripts
* Perl version 5.8.1 or later
* The Berkeley DB File Perl module (DB_File.pm), GDBM_File.pm, MySQL or Postgres
* The ability to send out emails - either using the sendmail command or via an SMTP connection
* The ability to set cronjobs/scheduled tasks

Also, does my account have any restrictions with the number of emails that
may be sent out in a given time? This application has the ability to throttle
mail sending to stay within limitations that may be imposed.

Does my account meet these requirements? If not, is there an
upgrade to a plan that does?

Thanks!

You may also want to research your webhost's Terms Of Service regarding mailings lists. Some do not allow mailing lists to be set up. Others have limitations to the amount of email that can be sent out at one time. Limitations can be worked around, but it's best not to break the TOS with your webhost.

Please note: it is your responsibility to find this information out: If we receive your installation request, ask for the login details and installation fee, receive the total funds and installation fee, complete the upgrade/installation give you the details of the installation and then you use the program to only then find that there is some limitation in your hosting account that you did not tell us in advance, we will not issue a refund.

When Do You Start Working On My Installation/Upgrade?

We will start working on your installation/upgrade as soon as we have received the proper login information to do the job - usually access via FTP/ssh and we have been given the go-ahead to start by you confirming that the price for the installation/upgrade is correct and what you expect.

If we find that we need more information, we'll let you know. We try to be timely on our installations, but if we continue to need further information, we can only estimate the time that we can finish, based upon when we get all the information needed to the installation. This information is usually just your FTP login and web-based control panel login information, but in some cases, could mean more - especially if you host yourself on your own custom environment.

In detail, how will you install Dada Mail (changes to my account, locations of saved files, etc) ?

Our number one concern when installation Dada Mail is security.

Because of this, we take as many precautions as possible. We:

  • Save the directory list information (list settings, subscriptions lists, archives) in a location that's inaccessable to someone using a web browser, and also, by default, hidden to anyone using an FTP client or connected to your site via ssh.
  • Encypt the main, Dada Root Password. This encryption cannot be cracked in any way except brute force - in other words, guessing every single combination.

Our next concern when installing Dada Mail is upgradability

We feel that it's important to keep current with the newest version of Dada Mail as painlessly as possible. To do this, we

  • Set up multiple directories for each kind of list information
  • Save any configuration changes to the program in an outside configuration file - no need to reconfigure the program when a new version comes out.
  • Make sure backup information is being saved. Sometimes, server software upgrades break Dada Mail. We'll make sure that such upgrades that may break Dada Mail can be recovered easily.

When installing Dada Mail, we will be placing one new directory in the cgi-bin of your hosting account. We will be placing one new directory in your hosting account's home directory to save list information. No other changes to your account will be made.

Installations are tested to make sure:

  • List creation is working properly
  • List subscription/unsubscription is working properly
  • All email sending works using the sendmail command (not directly through SMTP) and using the PlainText backend. (If you would like the SQL backend, please just let us know the permissions to your MySQL or, Postgress server)

If you have any other questions/concerns on what the program can do or how it's set up, please let us know beforehand, not during and not after an installation is done. Giving us your account password after we get back to you is your confirmation that the installation/upgrade will commence as outlined.

How can I pay you?

Currently, we can accept PayPal, credit card or a check mailed to use. If neither of these ways works, please let us know before we start an installation. We do prefer PayPal, for convenience.

When Do You Expect Payment?

Payment is expected after we finalize what you would like installed, right before we start work for all installations. Receiving payment is our signal that you have confirmed that you would like the installation/upgrade.

For all installations and upgrades, if the installation/upgrade is cancelled by the client (you) before we have completed the installation, we will refund no less than half of the payment back, at our discretion.

Once we have completed the installation, there is no continued support for the installation, unless specifically specified by a separate agreement. If you have a problem, please use the message boards or contact us directly for paid support. We want you to succeed with Dada Mail and the best way to do that is to join the Dada Mail community!

What else do you need from me, before you can get started?

Other than Payment and your correct Login Permissions, you do need to have a working hosting account. For us, this means that you can give us a username/password combo that allows both of us to add/edit/delete files in your public html directory.

We are not going to set up your hosting account for you.

This includes setting up a hosting account on a Virtual Private Server, co-located server, dedicated server or anything like that - we're not going to do it. Before we come in, we need at the very least, a website up and permissions to install the program on. Setting up a hosting account is well beyond the pale of installing Dada Mail.

Is There Anything That Would Invalidate Me From Receiving a Full Year of Included Upgrades?

Yes.

Dada Mail has to be on the same account as when we first installed. A migration, by us, between accounts/servers is not covered. In other words, we're not moving your Dada Mail for you, every time you move account/servers. That's ridiculous.

Once your Dada Mail is migrated over to a different account/server, consider the year of upgrades voided. Your Dada Mail isn't guaranteed to work between different accounts/servers - it may become inoperable, without, at the very least a reconfiguration, if not a complete migration. We do offer migrations and if you want to still use Dada Mail, may need that service (or, as always, do it yourself). The only exception to this, is if your hosting company automatically migrates you because of a service upgrade on their end and wasn't something you had initiated. We understand that there's usually no choice on the matters and sometimes hosting companies aren't always clear on when they're going to do this migration/upgrade. If that's the case, we'll be happy to keep covering you for upgrades.

If you make changes to the program that causes the program to quit functioning - that would also void your year-long upgrades. We want you to fiddle with the configuration - just make backups of anything you fiddle with.

How do you handle upgrades to the program?

Upgrades are first handled by making an off-site backup of anything that is related to Dada Mail. We can move a Dada Mail installation between servers, from apparent "broken" installations, and migrate you from even an old Mojo Mail* install. Upgrades from Mojo Mail* will be amended with an automatic redirect from the old Mojo Mail* installation to the new Dada Mail installation, so your links/forms shouldn't break site wide.

If we are upgrading an installation that doesn't follow the secure method we practice, we will change things for security's sake, such as the location of the directory containing the list information. Please let us know if this is undesired.

All previous lists should work, with full list settings and archives in tact. If there are any global configuration changes to the program, we will do out best to continue to honor them.

Once an upgrade is completed, we will make an archive of the previous installation, for redundancy's sake. We DO NOT keep off site backups available for emergency reasons. We make no promises that we have available in any sort of order, a backup of a previous installation after we finish an upgrade. Feel free to ask, but - no promises.

What is the timeframe from installation request to finished installation?

Depending on how busy we are, this can be anywhere from the same day to about a week, the average being 3 days. When we answer your request for installation, we will give you a fairly accurate timeframe as to when the installaton/upgrade will be completed. We will contact you if we have to make any ammendments to this timeframe. If you need the program installation in a hurry we may be able to accomodate for a slightly higher installation/upgrade price for the "convenience".

What happens when a new version of Dada Mail is released? Do I receive an upgrade?

  • If you purchased a Pro installation, we will update the program for a one year time frame, if a new version is available.

Please contact us, when you find that a new version is available so we can schedule a timeframe to do the installation.

What's the Warranty for a Dada Mail Install?

We encourage that all new installations and upgrades be tested by our clients, as seen as we let them know an installation/upgrade is all set. If you do find a problem, please! let us know! There is a timeframe of 14 days between when a paid installation/upgrade is complete that we will fix any and all problems that you may have, provided that we deem the problems you're experiencing bugs in the program itself. If we cannot resolve the problems you are having to our own standards, we'll give you the option to ask for a refund. This DOES NOT include a scenario where you attempt to overload Dada Mail with too many susbscribers for which your hosting account is realistically suited for.

After this initial 14 days after a paid installation/upgrade, there is no extended support contract for a Dada Mail installation/upgrade, except for the included updates to the program itself.

If you do come across a problem after these 14 days, we'd really like to know, but we reserve the right to let you know that support for an already existing installation isn't covered by the purchase of an installation/upgrade and any more work will be done on a separate consultation basis.

Are There Any Organizations That You Will Not Work For?

Yes.

We will not work for any site that exploits women or children in a sexual manner. Um, Sorry . We also reserve the right to turn down any site that we feel is working in an illegal fashion or does not go with our general conscious. Example: online gambling, pyramid schemes, copyright infringment anything. Again, um, sorry.

Lastly,

We reserve the right to deny any installation request we receive, at any point in the installation/upgrade process. Most likely, we will only do this if our client (that's you) is completely incapable to work with or is using the program in a way we find abusive (ie, for spamming purposes). If any of these scenarios happen, we will return payment and wish you good luck and good day.

More Information on Customizations

WYSIWYG HTML Editor

This option adds a handy WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor to Dada Mail's, Send a List Message (Advanced), Send a List Invitation and Send a Webpage screens. This editor makes it easy to write an HTML email with formatted text and inline images, without having to know any HTML.

Currently we use FCKeditor, of which there is a demo of some of the features available here.

We do install FCKeditor with the ability to upload images from your desktop, to your server, so you can seamlessly embed images. It's pretty cool.

Mystery Girl (Bounce Handler)

Mystery Girl handles the sometimes tedious and always annoying task of dealing with bounced messages on your list. Instead of receiving bouncing messages yourself, they'll be received by Mystery Girl, who'll then go through them with a sharp eye and try to understand why exactly the messages bounced and do something about it. If the message bounces because the email address doesn't exist, the offending address is removed from your list. Mystery Girl uses a sophisticated points system, giving the problematic email address a bit of leaway when it comes to bouncing - just in case the delivery to that address was simply having some sort of temporary technical difficulties.

Mystery Girl runs in the background and involves no additional work on your part. Highly suggested.

SQL backend

The SQL backend option sets up Dada Mail using a MySQL or Postgres backend for Dada Mail to save its List Settings, Archives and Subscribers. Usually, this allows for a more robust and faster installation and does enhance archiving and list sending features in a few ways (here are the details). If you're interested in a particular SQL enhancement (for example, the Global List Sending), let us know, and we'll make sure it's enabled.

Beatitude (Mail Scheduler)

Beatitude allows you to write an email message, destined for your list, to be sent whenever you'd like in the future. Your message can be Plain Text, HTML (or both) and can have its contents came from a file on your server or a webpage. It also includes support for attachments.

You can also set the message to be sent on a continuing schedule - say, every day at 9:00am.

Messages can also be dynamic - for example: if you want to send the above schedule to send a webpage - but *only* if the webpage has new content.

Migrate Dada Mail

Basically, we move a Dada Mail installation from one server account, to another.

This can sometimes be annoying, tedious, messy and unsuccessful to do yourself, but we can do it, no problem.

back to customization choices >>

dada_bridge.pl plugin (discussion list support)

The dada_bridge.pl plugin does two things:

It allows you to send a message from your mail reader (Something like Outlook) to a special email address called the List Address, that 'll then be broadcasted (sent) , on behalf of you, to your list subscribers.

It also allows you to set up a discussion list that works the same way - subscribers to your list will have the oppourtunity to send to a special email address called the List Address, which will then be broadcasted (sent) to your list subscribers.

Discussion Lists work fairly similar to what you may be familiar with, but if you do have any questions about what exactly can be done, let us know.

Additional Direct Email Support

The price of the installation only really covers the actual installation - once it's installed, you are on your own except for the complementary upgrades for a year. For support help, you do have access to our support boards and mailing lists and can use those to your heart's content - we watch them, answer them, etc.

If that's not enough, you can have additional direct and prioritized email support. We'll give you a special email address to send your questions about Dada Mail to and we'll get to them before we get to any other support requests.

So that's basically what this covers, here's what it doesn't cover:

The direct email support stops at helping you via email. If you need us to go into the program and change something, actually *send out* a message, add a new feature, etc - that's gonna be extra.

Currently, we don't have direct phone support.

Custom Template for HTML Screens

By default, Dada Mail has a simple appearance, with a red header and a black hairline border.

Also by default Dada Mail's HTML email messages are without any real formatting.

We can change this, to basically, whatever you'd like.

If you have a template already in mind - for example (and probably the best example), you're current website, we can make Dada Mail's HTML screens look just like your website.

What we'll need is a sample of what you'd like Dada Mail to look like - this could be as easy as giving us a specific URL to your site - for example, your homepage.

We'll give you a mockup of what Dada Mail will look like for you to check off.

The above process starts at about $50.

Currently, we can easily customize the templates of:

  • Your List/User screens - this is what your users see when using Dada Mail when the subscribe/unsubscribe, browser the archives, etc.

Usually, there isn't a design that we can't fit Dada Mail into, without a good amount of success.

  • Your List Control Panel - this is the design you see when you're administrating your list

We suggest having a simpler design than something based on your actual website. We'll also have to fit in the admin menu, which is usually located on the left hand side. Nothin' too difficult, but you probably want the list control panel to be uncluttered.

  • Your HTML Mailing List Messages - this is the template your subscribers will see when they receive an HTML email sent with Dada Mail.

HTML email templates should be fairly simple as well - you won't want to use any sort of embedded Flash movies or Javascript, but we can help you create something that looks appealing and functional.
