They say Red Bull gives you wings, but to truly feel weightless, try Crunch’s AntiGravity Yoga class. Redefining the traditional workout, the one-hour session incorporates fast-paced yoga techniques and circus acrobatics that are usually performed 30 feet in the air. AntiGravity founder Christopher Harrison initially developed the workout for his aerial performance group to increase strength and heighten flexibility. For those seeking an innovative and playful routine, prepare to take flight at Crunch locations in Miami, Los Angeles and New York City. There’s no need to be afraid of heights, however, as the smooth hammock suspended from the ceiling remains close to the ground. The structured fabric encourages added movement supporting push-ups and allowing a deeper stretch when lunging and posing. Simple movements derived from Vinyasa Yoga such as Downward Dog and Warrior prep participants for thrilling tricks. Popular stunts include handstands and the Skydiver, where members are inverted with legs completely straight, wrapped around the hammock and not a single hair gracing the floor. “You work really dynamically with your body then get to perform fun inversions that are the icing on the cake,” says yoga instructor and Miami group fitness coordinator Robin Retherford. “The Average Joe who lacks physical strength can get upside down. It just helps create body awareness unlike any other [workout].” After the rush, cocoon peacefully in the silky hammock and meditate to soft sounds amid dimmed lights, slightly swaying back and forth. It’s really a whole new way to hang out.
