Miss Tibet -- support young tibetan women
Miss Tibet Tenzin Yangkyi
Miss Tibet Tenzin Yangkyi to participate in Miss Young International in the Philippines and Miss Asia Pacific World in South Korea.
Miss Tibet Tenzin Yangkyi will participate in Miss Young International in the Philippines in September and Miss Asia Pacific World in South Korea in October.
Tenzin Yangkyi was crowned Miss Tibet in June in McLeod Ganj, India. She is a student living in Zurich, Switzerland.
The Miss Tibet Pageant was first started in 2002 amid criticism and uncertainty among the exile Tibetan community. There were no sponsors either. The pageant continued against all odds and in June this year, it celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Lobsang Wangyal, the director of the pageant, produces the event as a platform for young Tibetan women, for them to open up and boost their confidence in the conservative Tibetan society. The pageant also aims to provide young women opportunities for international travelling and cross cultural experiences.
Over the years a few Miss Tibets have participated in a few international pageants. On a few occasions China objected to the Tibetan participation saying a Miss Tibet should wear a sash titled Miss Tibet-China. Putting on such a sash would be accepting and endorsing the current repressive and discriminatory Chinese policies in Tibet. As a result, the Miss Tibets had to pull out of two international pageants.
Tenzin Yangkyi needs funds for travelling, wardrobe and other logistics. If there is an excess of funds, the Director, Lobsang, will join in the finale of both or one of the pageants.
