Using a water-soluble ink, we created these "leaking" posters for the Dogwood Initiative's No Tankers project, which endeavours to keep oil tankers out of BC's coastal waters.

The Dogwood Initiative is a leading land-reform organization in BC whose goal is to make BC the global model for sustainable land reform. Since their launch in 1999 they have mobilized thousands of British Columbians around sustainable land reform issues. Their current initiative, NoTankers, aims to stop oil tanker traffic from entering BC’s fragile coastal waters.

It is not too early to start thinking of ways to live without oil. At some point it's going to happen anyway, so why not start reducing our dependancy now and minimise the chances of environmental catastrophies as well as emissions? It may sound far fetched but we have to strive start to find ways of shaking off our oil addiction.

Awesome Idea! For those of saying "How much Oil is really going to be spilt from Tankers?" First off... that's only one of the MANY effects these "200 additional tankers a year" with have on our coast. The radar and navigation systems these tankers use destroy and rupture the eardrums of Whales, Seals, Otters, and any other marine life that communicates through sound. Whales will die from internal bleeding from the ears... not to mention within a large radius of these tankers marine line will be deafened by the noise underwater. The channels between our islands of the coast are already so polluted and trafficked already by fishermen, ferries, float planes, whale tours, commercial boats... it's disgusting, stand up for your beautfil province, before its beauty is gone!!!

running the last bits of a dirty, out-of-date resource through miles of habitat destroying pipeline, across the hecate straight ( famous for insane waves and weather ) past one of the greatest natural areas in the world over to china is stupid. force the change by making oil extraction account for its environmental impacts in the price. this will make other forms of energy more viable.

@macacanadian "So what's the solution, xtiaan? More tankers? All the time? As many a possible?" No, I was merely pointing out that this campaign merely forces the problem to go elsewhere, it SOLVES nothing and as such is fairly tokenistic, the american continent has a bad history of foisting its toxic/environmental problems upon less developed countries, this campain seems just to be another example of this. If I had all the solutions Id be president of the world, I dont claim to have solutiions, Im merely voicing an opinion.

Such pathetically naive knee jerkism. Read. Learn. www.northerngateway.ca/project-info/marine-plan www.northerngateway.ca/files/ENB_NGP_BrochureOct26.pdf (page 8 and 9) This "campaign" is award show fodder. Nothing more, nothing less. It does nothing to address any issue. It just complains.

So what's the solution, xtiaan? More tankers? All the time? As many a possible? If no one speaks up, then the colluded interests of the provincial government and business just assume everyone agrees with them. That obviously is not the case. I want neither the tankers nor the proposed new pipeline and I am not alone. As for Bob, well, it's children that usually have no sense for the future. Continuing to depend on oil as we have with no consideration for the consequences sounds more than childish to me. It's downright stupid.

Beautiful execution and presentation. I completely disagree with the message. If you want to have a global impact, you need to consider what everyone's needs are globally. How do you suggest oil be transported to surrounding BC islands or any island country for that matter, especially Vancouver Island? 100,000 gallons of oil doesn't even fill 1/4 of the 3rd Beach Swimming Pool in Stanley Park. How many gallons of oil actually is spilled from Tankers each year? Well if you look at the track record of BC ships you will find that they are clean. Most of the oil deposits are a collection of all types of marine vessels, including the Rainbow Warrior (which, ironically was restricted from entering Alaskan waters a few years ago for failing to posses an oil spill response plan). Before taking on something as essential and astronomical as promoting "No Tankers" take a stroll on the Downtown East side and give a hungry dude a sandwich.

Brilliant

possibly the best idea, especially for the cause.

Welcome to the world of posters. Poster goes up, poster gets covered, poster goes up, poster gets coved. It happens. Finally, some real design creativity that cleverly interacts with its surrounding environment. Or is society willing to be oblivious to the ever rising pollution that is greatly contributed to by oil tankers?? Creative awareness or oblivion? Hmm..

totally rad!

I deeply hope that "jo" and "Bob" in his second post are just making fun... And by the way, ofcourse this will not stop the tankers, but those posters are brilliant idea.

I did not see one sign saying "post no bills". SO they are probably not posted illegally. Continuing to use fossil fuels is naive/stupid.

May 30 2011 - by JAOC
SWEET!

May 30 2011 - by Bob
And these are illegal signs posted on private property. Oh well, enter them in award shows anyways!

"keep oil tankers out of BC's coastal waters" what a naive/stupid position grow up, children

not much respect for the other posters. that's just rude.

lovely posters, but banning tankers from canadas coast is merely going to push the problem elsewhere, its not addressing the problem in any way shape or form.
