Katy Perry’s ‘Part Of Me’ Makes History With #1 Debut

February 23, 2012

spacer
Song’s #1 bow is just the 20th in the 53-year history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Katy Perry is back in a familiar place with her brand-new single: the top of the Billboard charts.

After performing “Part of Me” — the first single off the deluxe reissue of her Teenage Dream album — at the 54th Grammy Awards, Perry sat back and watched as the song debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, making it just the 20th track in the chart’s 53-year history to bow in the top slot.

According to Billboard, Perry joins a list of stars that includes Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and Eminem (not to mention a host of former “American Idol” champions) who have all accomplished the feat — the last was Lady Gaga, whose “Born This Way” opened at #1 nearly one year ago. In the process, Perry has notched her seventh career Hot 100 #1.

“Part of Me” also rocketed to #1 on the Digital Songs chart, racking up more than 411,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a career-best week for Perry, and is the highest opening number for any artist since Gaga sold more than 448,000 downloads of “Born This Way” last year.

Perry wasn’t the only artist to benefit from the post-Grammy bounce; Adele, who, as you might have heard, did pretty well at the show, not only sold an astonishing (and record-setting) 730,000 copies of her 21 album last week, but becomes the first female artist in Hot 100 history to have three solo titles in the Top 10: “Set Fire to the Rain” at #2, “Rolling in the Deep” at #5 and “Someone Like You” at #7.

Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, who both received, uh, mixed reviews for their Grammy-night performances, also found their way into the Top 10: Minaj’s “Starships” is in at #9, followed by Brown’s “Turn up the Music,” which lands at #10.

Katy Perry to Appear on Raising Hope

February 23, 2012

spacer
Pop superstar Katy Perry will guest star on Raising Hope on the Tuesday, March 6 episode of the Fox sitcom, the network announced via press release this week.

She’ll play a prison attendant who claims to be a former friend of Sabrina’s.

The episode will find Sabrina arrested after participating in an Occupy Natesville protest. She ends up in jail, and Perry’s Rikki (below) plays a key role there:

How did this come about? Executive producer Greg Garcia said:

Shannon Woodward (Sabrina) told me that her friend Katy was interested in doing an episode and I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s do your friend Katy a favor, then she came in and did a terrific job. She was hilarious. And now, people are telling me that Katy Perry is also a singer. I sincerely hope her appearance on RH helps her get her career off the ground. It’s a tough business.

Nicely played. We’re just sad she doesn’t have a blue ‘fro.

Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ Debuts Atop Action-Packed Hot 100

February 23, 2012

Check out Katy Perry’s BRAND NEW single “Part Of Me”: vevo.ly/yHKLxN

Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” rockets in at the Billboard Hot 100 summit, while Adele, the late Whitney Houston, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown all make notable news in the chart’s top 10.

Following her appearance at the 54th Grammy Awards on Feb. 12, Perry, who performed “Part” in a medley with her former No. 1 “E.T.,” engineers just the 20th No. 1 entrance in the Hot 100′s 53-year history. Lady Gaga had last stormed in at the chart’s top spot almost a year ago (Feb. 26, 2011) with “Born This Way,” which also benefitted from Grammys exposure last year; “Born” reached retail and radio the Friday before last year’s event, at which Gaga sang it.

“Part” marks the first start at the pinnacle of the Hot 100 for a single on the storied Capitol Records label. The song is Perry’s seventh career Hot 100 No. 1.

After Capitol released it to radio and retail on Feb. 13, “Part,” the lead single from Perry’s “Teenage Dream” deluxe edition, “The Complete Confection” (due March 27), blasts in atop the Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs with 411,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, marking Perry’s best career sales week. On Hot 100 Airplay, “Part” launches at No. 36 with 35 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS.

“Confection” picks up where the original version of “Dream” left off: producing a Hot 100 No. 1. “Dream” matched Michael Jackson’s “Bad” (1987-88) by tallying five Hot 100 leaders, the most toppers from a single album over one release in the chart’s archives.

A Grammy Awards afterglow likewise shines on Adele, whose three former Hot 100 No. 1s bullet in the top 10: “Set Fire to the Rain” holds at No. 2 (and No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay for a second week; 143 million, up 4%); “Rolling in the Deep,” the record and song of the year which Adele performed at the Grammys, charges back 17-5 (in its 59th chart week; 271,000, up 115%); and, “Someone Like You” jumps 11-7.

With the gains, Adele makes history as the first female ever to place three titles in the Hot 100′s top 10 concurrently as a lead artist. Only one other woman had ever claimed a 30% share of the top 10: Ashanti, who charted a trio of tracks in the top tier the weeks of March 30 and April 6 in 2002.She sported featured artist billing, however, on two of those entries.

Until this week, Chris Brown last placed three songs in the Hot 100′s top 10 as a lead artist the week of May 10, 2008. (More on Brown, who bows in this week’s top 10, ahead).

Adele’s historic week on the Hot 100 complements her record-breaking frame on the Billboard 200 albums chart. As previously reported, her sophomore set “21″ logs a 21st week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, passing Whitney Houston’s soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” for the most weeks on top for an album by a woman in the chart’s history.

Despite Houston’s posthumously ceding her Billboard 200 record to Adele, love for Houston following her death at age 48 on Feb. 11 results in a 7-3 Hot 100 jump for her signature 1992 ballad “I Will Always Love You.” The song ascends with the chart’s Greatest Gainer/Digital honor, improving by 89% to 367,000 in the first full sales tracking week following her passing.

Houston also rises on the Hot 100 with former ’80s No. 1s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” (35-25); “Greatest Love of All” (41-36); and, “How Will I Know” (a re-entry at No. 49).

Despite falling from No. 1 to No. 4 on the Hot 100 after two weeks in the driver’s seat (fairly literally, considering the song’s placement in Toyota’s current Camry advertising campaign), “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” nets the Hot 100′s Greatest Gainer/Airplay tag, motoring 7-4 on Hot 100 Airplay (91 million, up 19%). The cut decelerates 2-5 on Hot Digital Songs (252,000, down 3%).

In between Adele at Nos. 5 and 7, fun.’s “We Are Young,” featuring Janelle Monae, drops 3-6 on the Hot 100. Rihanna’s former 10-week No. 1 “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, falls from No. 6 to No. 8.

Nicki Minaj, whose performance of “Roman Holiday” at the Grammys drew mixed reviews (to be kind), roars onto the Hot 100 at No. 9 with “Starships,” the lead radio single from the rapper’s second studio set “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” (due April 3). The track arrives at No. 7 on Hot Digital Songs (204,000) and No. 72 on Hot 100 Airplay (17 million, up 67%).

The bow marks Minaj’s first arrival in the Hot 100′s top 10 and tops her previous best, set two weeks ago, when Madonna’s “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” featuring Minaj and M.I.A., opened at No. 13. (After lifting to No. 10 last week, becoming Madonna’s record-extending 38th top 10, “Luvin’ ” plummets to No. 39 this week).

Chris Brown rounds out the Hot 100′s top bracket, as “Turn Up the Music” enters at No. 10. After he performed the song in a medley with “Beautiful People” at the Grammys, the cut vaults onto Hot Digital Songs at No. 9 (180,000) and climbs 71-56 on Hot 100 Airplay (21 million, up 27%). “Turn” is also generating buzz for its remix featuring Rihanna, marking the first musical reunion of Brown and his former girlfriend following his domestic assault charges against her three years ago.

Check billboard.biz tomorrow (Feb. 23), when all rankings, including the Hot 100 in its entirety and the Hot Digital Songs and Hot 100 Airplay charts, will be refreshed, as they are each Thursday.

Blue-Coiffed Katy Perry Launches Her Eylure Eyelash Line

February 22, 2012

spacer
Tending to promotional duties for her latest beauty-related venture, Katy Perry launched her new false lash collection at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, California on Wednesday (February 22).

Clad in a blue color block frock, velvet pumps and matching coif, the “Part Of Me” songstress made sure to sign a few autographs and snap some pics with fans after making her stylish arrival in a classic blue convertible.

Earlier today, Perry, who was recently named as the face of the trendy cosmetic accessories, took to her Twitter to gush about the event, writing,

Today has been a BEAUTIFUL day! U debuted “Part Of Me” at #1 & now I can’t wait to bat my LASHES & thank u in person @ the Americana at 4pm!

The lashes are currently available at ULTA Beauty Stores nationwide and online at ULTA.com.

And in addition to launching an eyelash line and being a successful singer, Perry can add guest appearance on a TV hit show to her growing resume.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the pop icon will be starring in the March 6th episode titled “Single White Female” while playing the role of Rikki, a prison attendant who claims to be an old friend of Sabrina’s (Shannon Woodward).

What did the California beauty think of her new gig?

A couple of weeks ago, I was home, just toasting up a frozen chicken fillet when Shannon called me up and asked if I wanted to do something ‘fun’ for a change and try out a guest role on her TV show. I thought, sure, I have nothing else to do, and I like chillin’ with my best friend. Greg was nice, but I hope he’s not secretly sabotaging my potential future career by type-casting me in the role of just a looker, so that I would never be able to play anything more challenging,

Katy told.

Katy Perry Writing Explosive Songs About Marriage Breakup

February 22, 2012

spacer
The singer is said to be using her heartbreak as inspiration for her new album.

It’s the stuff that music is made of – breakups.

Katy Perry has been said to be getting over her marriage breakdown with Russell Brand by putting her feelings into some “explosive” songs for her next album.

The singer has been using the songwriting process as a therapy for her poor heart, and it seems that even her new song Part of Me is already aiming at the relationship failure as it includes the lyrics,

“You can keep your diamond ring. It don’t mean nothing anyway.”

An insider told Grazia magazine,

Katy goes from being angry one minute to upset the next. And she really is laying everything out there in her music, which she says has been extremely therapeutic.
”This new album will certainly be explosive.”

Personally, as a fan of Perry, I can’t wait for the new album, but it could be a little while yet as she has just churned out her rehashed Teenage Dreams album.
