Education Masters Degree

- Literacy

Traditional definitions of literacy no longer apply to the skills required for these modern times. As educators struggle to keep up with advancements in technology and to motivate students, they can advance their understanding of literacy by pursuing a focused Masters in Education. At the University of New England, professionals gain fresh insight into developments in this important component of early learning with the Literacy concentration.

The Literacy concentration devotes 15 credit hours of the Masters in Education Online program to a focused study of literacy instruction. This concentration is for educators who wish to delve deeper into the importance of reading and writing for all students. Because of the flexible online format, working professionals can advance their education while increasing the performance of their students through immediate implementation of new strategies in their own classrooms.

Current research and theory will be translated into practice during each class. Teachers will be coached to implement these literacy program strategies and will join colleagues online to critique the outcome. Additionally, teachers will learn how to apply literacy assessment to instruction. Study skills and literacy interventions that can be used within the content area will be explored. Literacy skills are essential for students to excel in any subject, and this program helps educators assess student progress in every area of their education. This program does not lead to reading specialist certification.

After reading the website and many of the posts it appears that for the Education Masters Degree – Literacy I would take

    MSEd Core Courses (15 Hours)
EDU 600 Teacher as Leader (3 Hours)
EDU 610 Differentiation Theory and Strategies (3 Hours)
EDU 615 Motivational Theory and Class Management (3 Hours)
EDU 690 Action Research Project (3 Hours)
    EDU 695 Portfolio (3 Hours)

And then I would take the 15 credit Literacy concentration. The Masters would be a 30 hours degree including these two elements. Am I tracking? Thanks.

Carolyn, yes, the MSEd programs are 30-credits in length. After you complete the first three core courses, you will start your concentration courses. Portfolio and Action Research are the last two courses.

Why does the program not lead to reading specialist certification?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - June 15th, 2011 at 11:38am

N, a graduate degree for reading specialists require more courses, a practicum or internship and are longer than 30-credit MSEd or 15-credit CAGS in literacy programs. The literacy concentration was designed for classroom teachers, who wish to learn current literacy techniques for classroom instruction and to delve deeper into the importance of reading and writing for all students.

Is this masters course taken in 1 year? (15 credit hours semester 1 and 15 credit hours semester 2)

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - June 30th, 2011 at 03:05pm

Stephanie, the online MSEd program may be completed in 18-20 months.

    Erika - July 30th, 2011 at 05:51pm

Can I take longer than 18 – 20 months to complete, or once I enroll in the program is there a timeline I must keep up with?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - August 2nd, 2011 at 03:59pm

Erika, should you need to take a break in the program, you have up to three years to complete the program for your courses to count for the degree. Your enrollment advisor can help you map out a degree plan.

    Michelle - August 18th, 2011 at 01:22pm

Why aren’t UNE’s accredidations (if any) advertised on the website?

    Shelly - August 20th, 2011 at 10:10am

Can this program be completed on a part time basis, like 1 or 2 courses a semester/year? (My employer will only reimburse for 6 credit hours per school year)

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - August 30th, 2011 at 12:44pm

Michelle, UNE’s accreditation is listed on the “About UNE” tab here: education.une.edu/accreditations/. UNE is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (regional accreditation). Programs are also pre-approved by UNE’s home sate (Maine’s Department of Education). Teachers in other states can verify approval with their state Department of Education or district.

Shelly, for credits to count for a degree or certificate, UNE students have up to three years to complete the MSEd or CAGS program.

    Rebekah - August 31st, 2011 at 09:18am

Do you need to have a classroom to begin the masters program?

    CS - September 24th, 2011 at 09:19am

You reply to N above that “a graduate degree for reading specialists require more courses, a practicum or internship and are longer than 30-credit MSEd or 15-credit CAGS in literacy programs.” Do you offer a grad degree for reading specialists?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - September 28th, 2011 at 10:34am

Rebekah, UNE requires one year professional teaching experience and instructional access to a classroom to apply your studies. Your enrollment advisor can help advise you on classroom access options.

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - October 7th, 2011 at 04:14pm

CS, UNE does not offer an online graduate program for reading specialists.

    Jenn - January 15th, 2012 at 04:22pm

    A couple of questions…
    1. Is this program completely online?
    2. When is the application deadline?
    3. I am Canadian and when I ask for more info it asks me to enter my zip code. I would like to speak to someone, what’s the best way to contact someone?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - January 20th, 2012 at 03:16pm

Jenn, Canadian teachers can enter their postal code in the zip code field. For the application deadlines for upcoming terms, please visit: education.une.edu/academic-calendar/. Yes, coursework is 100% online, with no campus visits required. We do require that our students currently are in teaching positions (or other school-role positions) in order to take the program, so they can use their own classroom as their “learning lab”.
