For Action Affinity Groups!

Considering planning on action on N17? You’ve come to the right place!

[you can download a zine version of this page to share!]

Here’s some ideas for actions:

  • Sit-in or Die-in. Choose when you sit, for how long, and when you want to leave.
  • Handcuff or U-Lock yourself some structure inside the bank like a doorway or the desks. If you have the key, then you can decide when to leave or force the cops to cut you out.
  • Blockade the entrance to the building by locking yourself to the doorway. Many options available: U-Lock, Lock box, Cement barrel, etc. If you want to learn more, check out our blockades training.
  • Lobby Dance Party with loud loud music, a public service announcement, and lots of glitter.
  • Flash mob style action inside the bank. You pretend you’re there to do business as usual, but, you’re not! You’re there to create a ruckus!
  • Bring your marching band to the bank! Pretty self explanatory and loud!
  • Hang a banner from the bank building.
  • Creative, attention-grabbing street theater outside the bank to educate folks on the street about the bank’s bad business and your message.

Got an action in the works? GREAT! Take these 3 easy step!

  1. Let us know you have an affinity group! Send an email or make the call right now and plug into the collaborative Day of Action. Just say, “Hi! We are interested in being part of the N17 Day of Action.” Contact join@n17pdx.org or call (503) 567-689. Don’t share any highly sensitive information over email, please, we’ll follow up with you to get more details. (The reason we ask people to contact us is so affinity groups avoid duplication, overlap, and encourage collaboration!
  2. Send at least one person from your affinity group to the next Spokescouncil meeting (Thursday 11/10, Saturday 11/12, Monday 11/14, and Wednesday 11/16 at the First Unitarian Church @ 1011 SW 12th).
  3. Get trained on Direct Action, media, legal rights, and more. Check out the full training schedule.

Ways we support each other:

  1. The media team facilitates collective messaging and media strategy. Affinity groups individual messages will be publicized, as well as a unified message to “Get the banks out of our democracy” and “Stop the foreclosures now.” This team is here to help translate the Day of Action for all those watching from home. media@n17pdx.org
  2. Medics watch out, advocate, & care for the needs of action participants–this need is not only to respond to police-related injury but to other injuries & illnesses. Affinity group medics train & move with the group. Street medics support the needs of the general march. This team can help affinity groups develop a team medic. medic@n17pdx.org
  3. The legal team tries to ensure that all participating affinity groups have access to legal support and  legal observers. legal@n17pdx.org (On the day of action, Legal/Jail support # is 503-902-5340.)
  4. Police Liaisons are available to communicate information gathered from the police to the affinity groups & to do what they can to buffer affinity groups from the police. policeliaison@n17pdx.org
