He’s Hollywood’s best-paid actor, but he doesn’t have to like it: “Basically, if they’re going to pay me the stupid money right now, I’m going to take it,” he says in Vanity Fair’s November issue. “I have to. I mean, it’s not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it’s for my kids. It’s ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It’s for the kids.” He admits, with much difficulty, that there is also “a part of me that needs to have this kind of stimulation to the brain.” (Depp is ever mum on the size of his Pirates ransom, but a report this summer cited his total take in the $300 million range, due to a gross-profit-sharing deal brokered with Disney. The four-film franchise has tallied $3.7 billion to date in worldwide receipts.)

Last night Johnny attended the GQ Men Of The Year Awards, where he presented the Writer of the Year award to Rolling Stone guitarist, Keith Richards. Photos are now available in the gallery!
The 15th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards announced Tuesday that Gore Verbinski’s animated hit “Rango,” with Johnny Depp giving voice to a chameleon who becomes a western hero, will receive this year’s Hollywood Animation Award at the gala ceremony on Oct. 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The film, which opened in March, was critically well received and earned $242.6 million internationally.
“It’s a great pleasure to recognize ‘Rango’ as the recipient of our animation award,” said Carlos de Abreu, founder and executive director of the Hollywood Film Festival in the announcement. “This piece of cinematic treasure borders on surrealism and ‘Rango’ will be a classic for generations to come.”
Previous winners of the animation award include Disney/Pixar’s “Cars,” “Ratatouille” and “Toy Story 3.”

Tim Burton has filled out the cast for his “Dark Shadows” update, including some fresh names and an actress we all could have assumed would find her way into the film at some point.
Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Moretz have been cast alongside Johnny Depp in the horror-thriller, which begins shooting at Pinewood Studios, THR reports. In addition, Burton’s wife (and frequent collaborator) Helena Bonham Carter officially has been confirmed as a member of the ensemble.
Burton’s film is an adaptation of a cult TV show that’s a favorite of both he and Depp. It reportedly casts the “Sweeny Todd” star as “self-loathing vampire” Barnabas Collins, who “returns to his human roots in search of his lost love.” Early reports also have the vamp interacting with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts, so we understand why the material appeals to Burton.
The director already had cast Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Bella Heathcote and Jackie Earle Haley, though this will be Depp’s show. Everyone else in Burton’s productions end up being window dressing to his beloved star and longtime creative partner.
THR says “Dark Shadows” will shoot entirely in the UK. Warner Bros. plans to release it May 11, 2012.
