About Duncan Gough
Who am I?
I am duncan <at> suttree <dot> com! The co-founder and CTO for GameLayers, the games company responsible for building The Nethernet, a passively multiplayer online game that turns the open web into a world of fun!
As a web games developer I have been involved in lots of prototyping – game ideas and game servers using Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails and Flash. As a blogger I’ve written about Massively Casual Online Games (MCOs) to outline casual games that are far less involving than current MMORPGs.
In 2008 I was fortunate enough to talk about massively multiplayer online games at the FutureSonic Conference in Manchester, and to the Guardian newspaper in London.
As a programmer, I use a mixture of PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl and Actionscript so you can tell that I’m a fan of high level, scripting languages. So much so that I designed an instant messaging robot which uses a layer of Bayesian analysis on top of the ALICE framework in order to create a learning chatbot with the ability to guess. I’ve also created flash games such as WordSlider and Jewel Thief based around the principles of casual gaming – to hit a sweet spot in the audience so that each game appeals to men and women of a wide range of ages.
I’ve also consulted on a number of game ideas for clients and agencies on various platforms (web, tv, mobile) with different ideals (gambling, viral, advergaming). Whilst at 3rd Sense, for example, I designed and implemented the very first Web 2.0 application for casual games called
Millionsofgames (now offline) which received a lot of positive praise:

Working at 3rd Sense where the company was split between two very remote locations, and again when contracting and working for companies such as GameLayers in America, I’ve also gained a great deal of project management experience where face-to-face contact is limited.
