Voice over Internet Protocol, commonly refered to as VOIP, is the use of the internet or an IP-based network (such as a local area network – LAN) to route voice conversations.

Essentially, VOIP is the use of the internet to make or receive phone calls. In order to do this it is essential that you have a broadband connection since the amount of data sent and received can be quite large (too much for a dial-up internet connection to handle).

The two most common ways to use VOIP is through the use of an external device connected to your broadband modem, which is used by services such as Vonage, or a softphone computer application used by services such as such as Skype.
