Orbiter Addon HowTo
If you have created a mesh generator for Orbiter, a spaceport on Ganymede,
or a new spacecraft, and you want to share it with other users, here is
how to do it:
Create a Readme file containing the following information:
-
What type of object is it.
-
Is it realistic (e.g. a model of the Space Shuttle) or ficticious (e.g.
a model of a tie fighter)?
The boundaries between these two categories are probably quite fuzzy.
"Realistic" objects don't actually have to exist, but they should be plausible
in the "near future" (whatever that is).
-
A list of all the files that make up your addon (meshes, textures, config
files)
-
A list of all modifications to the standard Orbiter files required to incorporate
your object (e.g. Solsys.cfg for ships, <Planet>.cfg for bases, etc.)
-
The Orbiter version (e.g. 010507) for which the addon was designed.
-
An (approximate) polygon count of your model, so users can estimate if
their computer can handle it.
-
Your name and email.
Put the following into a zip file:
-
All the files which make up your contribution, with the correct directory
structure so that everything ends up in the right place when unpacking
it in the Orbiter home directory.
-
Do NOT include any modified standard Orbiter files, like Config\Solsys.cfg
which may override existing files.
-
The Readme file.
-
An optional screenshot.
Put the zip file on the web, and post a note with a short description to
the Addon forum
at the Orbiter message board, including a link to the zip file, and optionally
to the screenshot.
Please note that I reserve the right to modify the format of Orbiter
files, in particular configuration files, at any time. This means that
addons may become obsolete at some point in the future, unless they are
upgraded accordingly. I will try to avoid this as far as possible, but
Orbiter development sometimes requires such changes.
Important:
-
Respect copyrights! Do not use copyrighted material in your addon (including
code and bitmaps) without the copyright holder's consent.
-
By making an addon publicly available on the addon forum, a file repository,
or by any other means, the developer accepts legal responsibility for his/her
software.
-
To protect your own rights, you should add a copyright note to your addon,
either as a separate file or as part of the readme file.
Please note that I cannot accept responsibility for addons developed for
Orbiter.
Of course, only FREE contributions will be accepted at Orbiter addon
repositories.
