Iwasaki Japanese Carver's & Cabinetmaker's Floats Iwasaki floats are the best tool of this type that we have been able to find. We feel that they are far superior to the domestically made floats that are available. Unlike the domestic floats, Iwasaki floats come very sharp, and because they are so hard, they will hold their edge remarkably well, even on the hardest woods like ebony. Iwasaki floats can even be used on aluminum. If your Iwasaki floats do eventually need to be sharpened, this will need to be done with a carving slip. They are far too hard to use files. The Iwasaki floats incorporate an innovative edge design, which gives them a fast and smooth cut, while minimizing clogging. The cutting teeth on conventional floats run continously across the face of the tool. On the Iwasaki floats, there is a staggered break in the cutting edges, which breaks the shavings for smoother cuts and less clogging. We include a Lutz file handle free of charge with every tanged Iwasaki float that we sell. We also sell the Lutz file handles & cleaners separately (see the Lutz page). Lutz file handles are made in the USA (Maine) with native birch and are of the best quality.
