Jobs

The WAO jobs committee works to change the conversation on jobs and the economy. We started in North Portland, sending delegations to Work Systems and WorkSource, to ask those organizations to better serve North Portland, and be more transparent in facilitating job opportunities from local employers, including the hundreds of jobs the community is hoping to see from SoloPower’s new manufacturing facility in Cathedral Park.

Our jobs committee has been participating in national days of action around job creation and infrastructure spending. We organized a protest to shut down the Steel Bridge on November 17, 2011 to draw attention to our nation’s failing infrastructure and the employment opportunities associated with solving that problem. And our members traveled to Washington during the first week of December to participate in Take Back the Capitol protests, bringing the 99% to Washington DC to protest in the capitol building, in our representative’s offices, on K street and at the Chamber of Commerce, all to demand good jobs as a national priority.

In the coming months, we’ll be working locally to keep the focus on what Oregon, and the rest of the country, needs: good jobs not cuts in services.

“Good jobs are the foundation for a strong economy and strong communities.
