March 6, 3:15-4:15 PM

What is the optimal pedagogy for incorporating game design into a high school curriculum? What are the district-level issues? How can game design play a role in Career & Technical Education (CTE)? Merritt, Nihalani, and Conover will discuss preliminary findings from a pilot study at Connally high school (Pflugerville ISD, TX) examining learning and motivation across a one-year course in Game Design. The course instructor, David Conover, is a 2011 Adobe Impact Teacher award-winner. Conover will provide teachers and administrators with a first-hand account of designing and implementing a 4-year game-design curriculum, including potential outcomes, necessary resources, and best practices. Ryan Merritt, Director of CTE for Pflugerville ISD, will discuss issues and challenges faced at a district level. Dr. Priya Nihalani is conducting a pilot study during the 2011-2012 school year investigating multiple research questions. She will provide a comprehensive overview of the project-based learning design and mixed-methods analysis. Findings are limited to this case-study; however, results from qualitative and quantitative data will be discussed along with suggested approaches for implementing a game-design curriculum and potential outcomes on learning and motivation. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Michael Mayrath.
