Jessica Obrist, a.k.a. Jo Jo Stiletto, performer and producer of nerd-themed burlesque, shares an insider’s view of her Joss Whedon-inspired show, and takes us on a journey of grown-up fan obsession.

Here’s a look inside our first issue:

This crustacean will mess you up

We asked Nerd Nite presenter Dr. Peter C. Thompson to write an article on stomatopods. They’re also known as “mantis shrimp” because of their highly specialized weapon that resembles an arm of the praying mantis. Fishermen call them “thumbsplitters” because of what they do to fishermen’s thumbs. Here’s an excerpt:

“The stomatopod’s major claim to fame is having the fastest recorded underwater attack strike and a set of eyes that puts your common human eyeball to shame.  Large stomatopods can deliver a blow with the strength of a .22-caliber bullet while taking aim with eyes that may be the most complex in the animal kingdom.  They use these tools to crack the shells of crabs and snails, capture passing fish and shrimp, communicate with their neighbors and mates using intricate visual signals, and defend their homes.”

Jumpsuit fashion, or how I learned to stop worrying and love an absurdly logical garment

Cassandra Gero’s article examines the sexy, rugged, and nerdy history of the jumpsuit. We also couldn’t help dressing up some of our nerds in the garment least conducive to peeing.
