Wellness Wednesday- “5 tips to boost your immune system!”
Posted by: Eve Torres on February 29th, 2012 | No Comments

BeliEVErs,

Right now during these winter months is when the sniffles start & the cold bug starts to go around. So for this Wellness Wednesday here are a few tips to help you get your defenses up… so you’re ready to beat those bugs!

Fruits and Veggies!

When we’re sick, we all hear our mother’s words echoing in our head “don’t forget to drink your OJ!”… and she’s right. Fruit & real fruit juice (not made from concentrate) is one of the best ways to get your daily dose of vitamins!

But what most people don’t realize is that we often get sick as a result of our body being overly “acidic” (our pH levels are too low). This means we have been eating too much sugar, processed foods, caffeine, alcohol, or have created toxins in our bodies from stress. How do we counter this? By eating “alkaline foods” that will help balance our pH levels. Green vegetables (like spinach, kale, broccoli, etc.) are considered “alkaline foods”, and they will help put your body in balance. Load up on colorful veggies, and it will be a sure-fire way to build up your body’s defenses against colds!

Green Tea!

Green tea is a great source of anti-oxidants, which help support your immune system! The properties in green tea ramp up your body’s natural defenses against infection & also has anti-inflammatory powers!

Exercise regularly

Sticking to an exercise routine helps boost your immune system! Through the physical activity your body’s defense system is challenged; it’s natural response is to produce more antibodies- and in turn your defense/ immune system is strengthened!

Get your rest

Sleep is so important when it comes to staying healthy & boosting your immune system! There are certain reconstructive processes that take place while you sleep; the rebuilding of blood cells that are responsible for transporting the correct nutrients, enzymes & hormones which are essential for a maintaining a strong & healthy immune system. Not only that, but during sleep or rest, the body has it’s opportunity to fight bacteria or viruses… thereby keeping you healthy!

Spend time with friends!

Believe it or not, a BFF can help you stay healthy! Studies have shown that spending time with friends & including fun into your lifestyle, significantly lowers stress levels. Stress can actually create toxins in your body that harm your bodily systems including your immune system. Reducing stress lowers cortisol levels in your blood, which is the main contributor/ culprit for a weakened immune system.

Wellness Wednesday- To Supplement or not to Supplement?

Fish Oil: The most important supplement you should be taking.

Many people ask the benefits of taking supplements or vitamins with your diet. We all know we should be taking a “multivitamin” everyday, but sometimes when we don’t see or feel the benefits of something right away we don’t make it a habit. From scientific studies as well as my own experiences, I want to emphasize the importance of adding Fish Oil supplements to your daily diet. It is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, and is hard to acquire the desired daily dose just through diet (unless you eat a LOT of fish!) Here are just a few reasons why you need to add fish oil to your meals:

- Reduces pain and inflammation.
- Fish oil helps heart conditions and can help prevent heart disease or stroke
- It’s good for the brain! It improves mental focus and has been known to help fight symptoms of ADHD, depression, alzheimer’s disease.
- Omega 3 Fatty acids can prohibit cancer growth
- Helps with weight loss and body fat storage.
- Improves skin condition
- Helps lower blood pressure.
- It’s been used for diabetes, kidney disease, weak bones

How many should I take?

The recommended dose is 2 capsules a day. This is a great place to start, but I take up to 5 capsules throughout the day some days, and I have really found that it has helped me with my skin, as well as reducing pain and inflammation that may or may not have been caused by Beth Phoenix spacer

Which fish oil supplement should I take?

There are a lot of supplements out there. Make sure that when you select a fish oil it has at least 200-400 mg of DHA and EPA per capsule. It should also be “species specific” and list the fish sources it derived from such as salmon, anchovies, tuna, mackerel, or sardines. Here are some good options you can order online, or find at your local GNC or Vitamin Shoppe.
