About the Argan Tree (Argania Spinosa) – Tree of Life

On the Souss Plains in an area covering 800,000 hectares deep in the south west region of Morocco there are trees that grow exclusively to the region and are known to bring many health benefits. The local tribe, the Berbers, call it the ‘Tree of Life’.

The tree is a relic of the Earth’s Tertiary Period, which ended about 1.6 million years ago, and it only grows a few other places in the world. Considered to be one of the oldest trees on earth it is believed to have grown over 80 million years ago. Argan Trees have been known to live as long as 200 year and can grow to reach a height of between 8 to 10 metres tall.  The roots of the tree grow deep underground and extend to a great depth, this helps to protect against soil erosion as the Sahara desert encroaches from the South.  The trunk of the trees are often twisted and crooked, allowing goats in the area to climb the base and edge their way along the branches to eat the fruit and the leaves.spacer

In the months of May or June the tree produces hermaphrodite flowers which range in colour from green, yellow or white. These are followed by the Argan fruit which takes over a year to mature. The fruit is an oval berry and is about the same size as a large olive. It has a thick outer peel surrounding a sweet smelling pulp. The pulp encases a hard nut, which contains one or two small oil-rich seeds.

Currently there are approximately 21 million Argan trees which play a vital role to the environment and is also an important element in the food chain, today their numbers are declining. In 1999 the Argan Forest was declared an International Biosphere by UNESCO.

The Miraculous Argan Oil

Argan Oil is one of the rarest oils in the world due to the small and very specific area of the world that the tree grows in. Argan Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and as such has many cosmetic and nutritional benefits. One of the main properties of argan oil is omega-6 which when used effectively can contribute to the barrier function of the epidermis. By using an oil that is rich in essential fatty acids you will help your skin prevent or delay wrinkling because the skin becomes naturally more supple and toned.

By using Argan Oil you will help to naturally reduce the signs of ageing and prevent dehydration andspacer  sun damage due to daily exposure.

Argan Oil has been used by the Berbers of the southwest Atlas Mountains as protection from the harsh climate, the burning sun and the strong winds. Throughout their lives they have used argan oil for:

  • Treating adolescent acne and treating eczema
  • Softening the skin of pregnant women and preventing stretch marks
  • Cooking in traditional Moroccan dishes
  • Massaging into the joints to treat rheumatism in adults
  • Healing over chicken pox spots
  • Massaging babies and infants
