SOTA Catalyst Award Call for Entries

The Society of Typographic Aficionados is now accepting applications for its third annual Catalyst Award for young people who have created original work in type design, type history, or other areas related to typography. It recognizes a person 30 years of age or younger who shows both achievement and future promise in the field of typography.

Please refer to the official call for entries for details.

The deadline for entries is March 9th, 2012.

Corey Holms Joins the Board

The Society of Typographic Aficionados is pleased to announce the addition of Corey Holms to the SOTA board of directors. Corey designed and spearheaded the identity for TypeCon2010 in Los Angeles and has remained a committed, energetic, and valuable contributor to the creative aspects relating to SOTA and our annual conference.

TypeCon2012 is Coming to Milwaukee

The mighty Milwaukee, Wisconsin has been selected as the host city for our 14th annual conference next summer. We are very excited to be working with folks at the historic Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum - in nearby Two Rivers, Wisconsin - on several special events and workshops for the conference.

Details regarding the date, venue, and program will be published on the TypeCon site, via our Twitter stream, as well as in our email newsletter over the next few week.

SOTA Typography Award Honors Erik Spiekermann

The Society of Typographic Aficionados has announced that architect, type designer, author, and educator Erik Spiekermann has been honored with the 2011 SOTA Typography Award. The presentation took place on Saturday, July 9th 2011, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans, as part of TypeCon2011.

Font Aid V: Update

The process of integrating the hundreds of glyphs that were submitted has been a massive task. We underestimated both the number of people interested in participating, as well as the sheer amount of work required to get the Font Aid V: Made For Japan font assembled. There are currently three people working feverishly to put the finishing touches on the typeface, which we hope to have available in early June through several font distributors.

2011 SOTA Catalyst Award Winner Announced

The Society of Typographic Aficionados is pleased to announce that Erin McLaughlin will be the recipient of the 2011 SOTA Catalyst Award. Erin will present her work and receive the award during TypeCon2011: Surge, taking place this July in New Orleans. This year SOTA is also extending honorable mention status to three individuals whom the judges wanted to acknowledge. See the full announcement for details.

Font Aid V: Thank You!

The Society of Typographic Aficionados would like to thank everyone who got involved and helped us promote Font Aid V: Made For Japan. We’re thrilled by the response to this project and by the sheer number of submissions. Neil Summerour and Grant Hutchinson are currently working behind the scenes reviewing submissions and assembling the “Made For Japan” font. Once completed, the final OpenType font will be available for US$20 through several distributors. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.

TypeCon2011 Call for Programming

The Society of Typographic Aficionados is now accepting programming proposals for its thirteenth annual conference.

We are currently reviewing proposals for contemporary and historical presentations and panel discussions, focused hands-on workshops in both the digital and non-digital realms, and a variety of programming for the Type & Design Education Forum and other special events.

TypeCon2011 Town Hall Meeting in New Orleans

The Society of Typographic Aficionados will be on location in New Orleans on Tuesday, October 19th to meet with local crew and others interested in helping to develop the TypeCon2011 program and special events. We are looking for volunteers and contributors who are as in love with type and design as we are.
