  • "Hollywood has tried to court us, but Hollywood doesn’t understand that once you’ve self-distributed to a mass audience — and we’ve got an audience larger than a lot of cable shows — and they offer you $2,000 per episode, we’re like, 'What are you talking about?' We already have an established fan base. We can’t sign the idea away for low money. With 20 million-plus downloads over the last year, and a strong brand and a strong Web site, that’s crazy."

Decemberists Take Page from Stephen Colbert's Playbook

spacer

Taking their cue from Stephen Colbert, faux Victorian rockers The Decemberists filmed the video for "O Valencia!" in front of a green screen and are asking fans to add their own animated footage. But unlike Colbert, the band is asking for all entries to be submitted on NTSC Beta SP, Digibeta, miniDV (DV, HDV, or HD), or as uncompressed QuickTime or AVI files on DVD. The video will appear on MTVU and the winner will get a new mac.

Bands asking fans to remix videos is nothing new, but DVD = WTF. Call me a breathlessly bloviating techie whuff monster if you will, but the Internet was made for fan participation. Besides, your record label (Capitol, of the famous Capitol Records building) is owned by EMI, which to the best of my knowledge is all buddy-buddy with YouTube. Hell, Capitol Records even has a YouTube profile.

Don't get me wrong, I love The Decemberists. My friend Mike Calderone at The Observer gave me a copy of Her Majesty when we were in Russia, and I listened to "Red Right Ankle" on repeat for many moons. But it'd be nice if Colin Meloy and company would hook this contest up to the Internets. I mean, do they even make stamps anymore?
