Lonie Paxton back with Broncos on Sunday

from First and Orange

Lonie Paxton received plenty of hugs from Broncos teammates today as players gathered to clean out their lockers and attend a final team meeting of the 2011 season.

Paxton, Denver’s longsnapper, missed Saturday’s game in New England because he chose to remain in Denver with his wife who was experiencing complications with her pregnancy. Paxton’s wife is carrying fraternal twins and is not due until March.

Paxton said he appreciated the support from the Broncos’ coaching staff and front office, his teammates and from Broncos’ fans as he dealt with the very personal and difficult family situation.

from denverpost.com

and now we know.

Providence, R.I. — Broncos long-snapper Lonie Paxton is staying back from the team’s playoff game Saturday against his former New England Patriots to help care for his wife, who has been having complications with her pregnancy with twins.

Paxton wanted to reach out to Broncos fans after he and his wife have been overwhelmed with well-wishers.

“He really appreciates the tremendous outpouring of support out there,” said Paul Sheehy, Paxton’s Littleton-based agent.

Broncos’ long-snapper Paxton to miss Patriots playoff game

The Broncos went through their last on-field work this morning — a brief walk-through practice at their Dove Valley facility — before heading to the East Coast for Saturday night’s AFC Divisional round playoff game in Foxborough, Mass.
Despite a short week after their victory over the Steelers in Sunday’s wild-card game, the Broncos find themselves reasonably healthy for the game against the Patriots.
However, the big question will be what the Broncos do for a long snapper. Lonie Paxton has been excused from the team this week to take care of what Fox called “a personal, family matter” and will not play.
As of Thursday evening, team officials intially gave indications Paxton would be able to to make

the trip, but had given Paxton their blessing to take care of the things he needed to.
Guard Chris Kuper has been the team’s backup snapper in recent seasons, but Kuper is on injured reserve with a fractured leg he suffered in the regular-season finale.
Kuper’s backup Russ Hochstein is considered the likely player for the job Saturday night. Hochstein has played guard, center, fullback and lined up as an extra tight end in his career. He was the Patriots’ backup long snapper when he played for New England.

Broncos long snapper Lonnie Paxton ruled out at New England

from ProFootballTalk

our thoughts and prayers are with Lonie and his family at this time.

In a potentially significant development for Saturday night’s playoff game, the Denver Broncos are without their long snapper.

Lonnie Paxton has been ruled out for the game at New England, the team confirmed today. Paxton has missed practice this week for what the team has described as personal, family reasons.

The team hasn’t said what those personal, family issues are, but Broncos coach John Fox sounded concerned about Paxton personally, more than he was concerned about the status of his special teams.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” Fox said Thursday.

Anyone who remembers the playoff game between the Giants and 49ers nine years ago knows how important a long snapper can be in a playoff game. In that game, the Giants’ recently signed long snapper, Trey Junkin, botched a snap on what could have been a game-winning field goal, and the Giants lost.

It’s not immediately clear who will handle the long snapping for the Broncos. Adam Caplan of Sirius/XM reports that they worked out two long snappers yesterday. With the old adage that you only notice long snappers when they do something wrong in mind, Broncos fans will hope that they don’t notice Paxton’s replacement on Saturday.

Broncos long snapper misses practice

Fingers crossed that everything is ok and thoughts and prayers are with Lonie and his family for whatever they are going through

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – The Denver Broncos, whose stellar kicking game played a huge role in their return to the playoffs after a six-year absence, had to practise most of this week without long snapper Lonie Paxton.

He was excused to attend to a family matter, coach John Fox said Thursday without revealing specifics.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” Fox said. “He’ll be day-to-day just like all of our injuries.”

Asked if there’s any concern Paxton might not play Saturday night at New England, Fox said: “We’ll answer that day-to-day.”

After practising Tuesday, Paxton missed workouts Wednesday and Thursday. If he’s unable to play against the Patriots, Russ Hochstein might be the fill-in.

“Like any position on the team, we’re well-prepared,” Fox said.
