In high school she was Homecoming Queen, varsity cheerleader and athlete. Today, she’s the Killer Queen, one of the most entertaining women’s wrestlers in the world, and a multi-time champion.

Ashley was born in a small Ohioan town, and became a wrestling fan through her two older brothers, admiring Shawn Michaels, Trish Stratus and Molly Holly. She chose to leave college after her first year (she held a 4.0 GPA) to pursue her dream of becoming a professional, and began training under Jeff Cannon in Coschocton, OH in early 2005. She debuted in Ohio Championship Wrestling in May, in a match refereed by former WWE Diva Ivory. She became a star in the promotion, and became the inaugural OCW Women’s Champion March 2007, a title which she would hold on two occasions.

She came to wider prominence upon her October 2007 debut in SHIMMER Women Athletes. Despite mixed results to begin her tenure, Ashley found success forming a tag team with her former rival Nevaeh. Promoter Dave Prazak described the Ohio Girls as being the female equivalent of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and the team broke through on Volume 20. In a gauntlet match to crown the first SHIMMER Tag Team Champions, Ashley and Nevaeh defeated five other teams, taking home the gold. They went on to hold the titles for 196 days, making seven successful defences, before losing to the Canadian Ninjas on Volume 26.

Ashley’s performances in OCW and SHIMMER had attracted the attention of officials from TNA Wrestling, and she was brought in for a tryout in January 2009. Initially expecting to only be in a dark match, she was thrown onto TV in a match against Awesome Kong under her new ring name, Madison Rayne. Although Rayne was dominated, she showed enough and was signed by the promotion. Madison would make a big splash just a month after her debut, turning on her partner Taylor Wilde to join Angelina Love and Velvet Sky in The Beautiful People. Madison was forced to do Angelina and Velvet’s dirty work as part of her initiation into the group, often putting herself in harm’s way. In August it all unravelled, when Madison’s interference backfired costing Angelina the Knockouts Championship. Madison was booted from the group, and received the patented brown paper bag treatment.

Madison apologised, and was allowed back into the group in the absence of Angelina who had contractual issues. Madison and Velvet teamed up in the Tag Team Championship tournament, but were unsuccessful. They would add Lacey Von Erich to the group, a move which proved very unpopular with former leader Angelina, who returned in January 2010. Furious that she had been ‘replaced’, Angelina waged war on her former partners, but it didn’t stop the Beautiful People winning the tag titles in February.

It was in April 2010 at Lockdown, that Madison had her breakout moment. In a tag team match, where Madison and Velvet’s tag titles were on the line against Angelina’s Knockouts Championship and Tara, Madison shocked the world by pinning Tara, becoming the first Knockout to hold both titles simultaneously.

Madison’s championship reign would get off to an explosive start, she defeated Tara in a Title vs Career match at Sacrifice, before doing the same to Roxxi at Slammiversary in a controversial and vicious match. Madison would lose the title to Angelina at Victory Road, as the interference of a mystery woman was deemed to be in breach of the match rules. Madison protested, threatening to sue TNA, and she was returned the championship for her second reign. Angelina and Velvet, both furious at Madison’s new alliance, reunited, and Angelina would again defeat Madison for the Knockouts Championship. The orignal Beautiful People also succeeded in revealing the mystery woman to be Tara – who Madison waived the career-ending stipulation in return for unwavering loyalty. This was when Tara won the championship at Bound for Glory, before Madison forced her to lay down and let Rayne pin her to achieve her third Knockouts title.

Madison would instantly find a new rival in Mickie James, who disapproved of Madison’s tactics in becoming champion. Madison initally presented Tara as a roadblock for the new contender, but when Mickie beat Tara in a Steel Cage match, Madison was forced to face her at Genesis 2011. The self-crowned Queen Bee defended her title thanks to the help of Tara, and would do so again in a Last Woman Standing match at Against all Odds. Mickie wasn’t going to give up however, and she challenged Madison to one more title match at Lockdown, which the champ accepted as long as Mickie put her hair on the line. Prior to the match, Madison forced an reluctant Tara to run her challenger over with a motorbike, softening James up. Mickie fought back, however, and pinned Madison inside of a minute in the cage, ending Rayne’s third reign. Madison would receive her rematch at Sacrifice, with the stipulation that if she failed to win, her contract with Tara would be voided leaving Tara free. Madison paid for her increased aggressiveness towards Tara, who turned on her, knocking Rayne out with her own loaded glove in the culmination of a year long storyline.

Madison’s evolution as a wrestler, both in the ring and as a character has been incredible to watch. She’s gone from an athletic, fiery, underdog babyface to a vicious, manipulative and vocal villain, who is one of the most interesting and entertaining heels in wrestling today. She’s achieved so much, and in her own words, hasn’t hit her prime yet. Madison-Rayne.net will be there following every step of her career as it continues.
