For those of you who don't have kids or are far too young to remember
the splendid children's TV programme "Rainbow", this may be a little
lost on you...... but it was a great show to watch!

Almost too ridiculous to believe... Below is transcript taken from the
Unseen on TV Video clip. Innuendo all the way....

The sketch opens with Zippy peeling a banana...

Zippy: "One skin, two skin, three skin, four.... "

George: "Zippy, where is Bungle?"

Zippy: "I think Geoffrey is trying to get him up"

We see a view of the door and hear Bungle moaning from behind it.

Bungle: "Geoffrey, I can't get it in"

Geoffrey: "You managed it last night"

Bungle: "I know, let's try it round the other way around. Ooooooh, I've got it in"

Bungle and Geoffrey enter the studio with Bungle carrying a hammer and peg kit

Bungle: "Would you stick this on the shelf, George"

George: "I can't reach, you'll have to stick it up yourself,

Geoffrey (to camera) " Hello everyone, today we are talking about playing"

Bungle: "Playing with each other, Geoffrey?"

Geoffrey: "Yes Bungle, do you have a special friend that you like to play with?"

George: "Yesterday we played with our balls.

Are we going to play with our friend's balls today?"

Bungle: "Yes, and we can play with our twangers as well."

Geoffrey (to camera): Have you seen Bungles twanger?

Zippy: "Oh I have, I showed him how to pluck with it."

Bungle: "It's my plucking instrument."

Geoffrey asks the audience if they can pluck like Bungle

Zippy: "I can, I'm the best plucker here."

George: "And I'm good at banging. My peg's hard isn't it Zippy?"

Zippy: "Well of course it is, Your peg wouldn't go in if it was soft."

Geoffrey: "Let's get back to Bungle's twanger."

Bungle (excited): "Oooooh Geoffrey, we could all paint our twangers couldn't we?"

George: "Let's sing that plucking song."

Bungle: "Rod and Roger can get their instruments out and Jane has got two lovely Maracas."

Singers Rod, Roger and Jane enter.

Rod: "We could hear you all banging away."

Roger: "Banging can be fun."

Jane: "Ooooh yes, and I was banging away all last night with Rod and Roger."

Roger (looking sad): "Yes, but it broke my plucking instrument."

Geoffrey: "Never mind Roger, let sing the plucking song, come on

everybody get your instruments out."

Rod (to Jane): "Do you want to blow on my pipe while I'm twanging away?"

Jane: "Oh no Rod, I was blowing a lot with Roger last night. But would you

like to play with my maracas?"

Zippy: "No, let's just pluck away with our twangers."

Bungle: "Yes, it doesn't matter what size your twanger is."

Zippy: "I've got a big red one."

George: "I've only got a tiny twanger. But it works well and I like to play with it."

Geoffrey (to viewers): "Well, have you got your twangers out? And remember,

you can bounce your balls at the same time. If you haven't got any balls,

ask a friend if you can play with his. Now, let's all sing the plucking song."

Everyone in studio: "Pluck, pluck, pluck away, we're going to pluck all day today."

"Pluck, pluck, pluck away, we're going to pluck all day."

Geoffrey (to viewers): " It's time for us all to go now, but don't forget ....

to get your twangers out and play with your balls."   "See you soon.  Bye."

Video clip information

Back in the early days, before the days of VHS and now recordable DVDs etc the VT depts of both the BBC and ITV would make elaborate out-take, p*ss-take shows for sending out to their staff.   The practice was stopped by the various TV managements once copies got out on Betamax and VHS around the early eighties for legal / taste reasons etc.

THE 'Twangers' clip was actually written by Roy Skelton, who not only voiced Zippy AND George, but was also a Dalek in many old Doctor Who stories.

It's a real tape with the real performers, but it was filmed as a joke and never intended for public consumption.   There was a great tradition at the BBC and ITV companies of the videotape editing departments compiling tapes for their christmas parties - including clips with shows shot especially for the internal tape.

It was recorded in 1979, when the show had been running for several years.
It was never intended to be shown on TV.   In fact, the sketch was performed simply for the amusement of the cast and crew, and would have been lost to history, were it not for the
OBA 1 Christmas tape put together by Thames TV engineers.

OBA 1
-----------------------------------
(Thames, 1979, 20m)

E/H: Countdown clock (Animated photos barking 'VT, are you ready?' etc)
E/H: Star Trek parody (Search for new civilizations, etc)
R/M: Hot Gossip (Or people very much like them)
E/H: 'Tonight on OBA 1'/Kenny Everett jingle
E/H & O/T: OBA recruitment ad - includes Tommy Cooper out-takes
A/C & R/M: Kenny Everett jingle (overdubbed - changes 'Thames TV' to 'OBA')
A/C & E/H: Buzby Telecom parody
E/H: Ad for new station chip
E/H: Negro animation
O/T: The Sweeney - Ad spoof
R/M: Rainbow sketch **
E/H: VT groupies/deodorant ad spoof
Kenny Everett link (Choir)
O/T: The Kenny Everett Video Show - Sid Snot says he's not a swearing man
R/M: Spike Milligan - 'Merry Christmas, even if you're Jewish...'
-----------------------------------

** The Rainbow sketch -
Two separate edits of this were shown on Channel Four programmes,
TV Unzipped and TV Offal (1997).

The key to the above is:

O/T: Out-take - An untransmitted clip from a television recording session

A/C: Archive clip - A clip from a hitherto transmitted programme
(including clips shown out of context for double entendre reasons)

R/M: Recorded message - A piece recorded especially for the Christmas tape usually during a recording session

E/H: Engineers' humour - Sketches and songs performed by VT office staff

Your Emails -

Ben, Peter, Bob and many more have asked - Wasn't it Rod Jane and Freddy?

Answer -    Initially In 1974, they were Rod Burton, Jane Tucker and Matthew, but Matthew didn't hang around for long he went into the family business to be the human side of Sooty (Matthew Corbett). He was replaced by Roger Walker (1977) and then by Freddy Marks (1980). In 1981 Rod, Jane and Freddy are awarded their own Thames Television series, coincidentaly named "The Rod, Jane and Freddy Show".
This runs for seven series, concurrently with Rainbow.
Last seen:
- 2000/1 appearing in "Aladdin" at the Lyceum Theatre, Crewe.
- Jane Tucker will be in Barnstaple for the launch of panto publicity on Thursday May 25th.
She will be appearing at the Queen's Theatre, Barnstaple, in Snow White from the 14th December 2006 to 7th January 2007. info -->

Tony asked - Is there any more of these tapes?

Answers -
For several years during the late seveties, it was the practice of the BBC Video Tape department to compile a Christmas tape made up of outtakes and bloopers, and other specially shot material to watch at the end of year parties.  The best of these was the 1979 tape, "Good King Memorex", which, in addition to containing several outtakes from The Goodies, also features segments with John Cleese (from Fawlty Towers) and Dr Who and the Daleks.   Mel

From memory they were 'White Power Christmass', 'Little Parcels' and 'Good King Memorex'. I remember watching them at a party in the early eighties with a crowd of mates who were all Trainee BBC engineers.  There was also a clip cleverly edited of an interviewer talking about sex and some royal talking about horse riding.  I seem to remember it was all very funny, particularly a clip of Dr Who, (Tom Baker), assistant Leela, K9 and a bottle of Vodka.    Matt.

Two brillant shows that will never be broadcast were Good King Memorex and White Powder Christmas from 1979 - 1980 parts of which could have given South Park a run for its money!   Nick.

The Tape Ops at all the ITV stations used to record tapes full of bloopers and specially recorded spoofs for a Christmas competition each year. These were "sent up the line" to all VT departments around the country and then a winner was voted for.
This Rainbow episode only ever lasted a few minutes and was a "one off", sadly never to be broadcast. It would have been very entertaining to see the kiddies' mums' faces tho.    Cheers. Paul

I worked at Thames Television in VTR at the time and it was something the Rainbow team did for our Christmas out take tape. The original version was 20 mins long but we had to cut it down to balance up the tape as a whole. They were a great laugh. As was Kenny Everett who was making his show at Teddington at the same time. He and a very young Billy Connoly did a great sketch as security men singing a little song that went...
"Arseholes are cheap today
cheaper than yesterday
Little boys are half a crown
Standing up or lying down."

Charming eh?? Still enjoyed seeing the clip.   Colin

One was made by BBC technicians for a video called \"Powder White Christmas\". Spoofs were made for many Childrens TV programmes, including Dr Who. ITV Technicians made one the same year called \"Saturday Banana\". Apparently, they were an annual feature from the technicians.   Graham.

Several were made for the production companies that year, there are others floating around there.   Cheers, Rich.

I worked for the BBC and ITV for several years and have half a dozen or so on VHS.
I even "starred" in a couple,   Dave.

Someone asked about another childrens TV show "Captain Pugwash" and it's characters names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, Pirate Willy and Roger the Cabin Boy.
In fact, the crew of the famous Black Pig ship included sailors with no such names: present on board were Master Mate, Tom the Cabin Boy, and Pirates Barnabas and Willy.

Did the crew do this on board the Black Pig?.  Make your own mind up Click here to find out.
