In addition to the standard kleos1 that comes from winning an intramural championship at Southern Virginia, members of “Lights Out” will get an added bonus for their hard-fought victory—they will be the first to don the newly minted Intramural Champion tee shirts designed for the first time by the office of Communications and Marketing.
The shirt’s design was chosen by students out of three different designs posted on the university's Facebook page. The design was developed primarily by graphic designer Nathaniel Sidwell, taking inspiration from one of the most versatile athletes of all time, Jim Thorpe.
Voted “greatest athlete” of the first half of the 20th century by the Associated Press in 1950 after winning both the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics, Thorpe seemed the perfect muse for Sidwell’s design, which needed to cover multiple intramural sports and activities.
Thorpe, who broke down racial barriers as a Native American competing in three different professional sports leagues—he played baseball, basketball and football all professionally—was recognized on April, 16, 1973, by President Richard Nixon and the U.S. Senate for his athletic achievements. Here's a short biographical video about Thorpe.
Intramurals will resume next Tuesday, Feb. 28, with a four-week, 5-on-5, co-ed basketball tournament. Participating teams will play every Tuesday and Thursday (except during spring break) in The Barn from 8-10 p.m. Two females must be on the court at all times; no varsity or junior varsity basketball players may participate.
