This multi-agency partnership is in it’s second year. This year, Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Los Angeles Galaxy/AEG Worldwide (Owner of the Galaxy), Keep California BeautifulSM (KCB) and the Plastics Industries of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) teamed up to expand the popular regional contest from a 7 week challenge to a 9 week challenge to see which soccer teams, comprised of players ages 10-13, could collect and recycle the most material by weight.
During Recycle. Goal. 2011 more than 2 dozen teams (more than 500 young athletes) across Southern California collected and recycled more than 26,000 pounds of materials. The total included more than 2,600 pounds of plastics.
2011’s winning team – The boys (13u) Anaheim Impact- recycled more than 13,000 pounds of materials alone! The all boys team comprised of players 13 and under hailed from the Anaheim Soccer Association (ASA). All qualifying teams received a gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, and the Impact’s grand prize was a free soccer clinic conducted by the LA Galaxy and tickets to a Galaxy game.
The second place team, the girls (12u) Anaheim Impact, also from ASA, received a gift card from Dick’s Sporting Goods and tickets to a Galaxy game. The Anaheim Impact girls recycled more than 4,500 pounds during the competition.
Plans are already underway for next year’s challenge! We anticipate an August, 2012 “kick off.”
