Video Games Live - London

Posted by Daniel Lawrence on 11/15/06 06:06 PM

On the 25th of November, Video Games Live is coming to London, England. This will be the first ever video game music concert in the UK, and the first Video Games Live concert in Europe.

The four British staff members will be attending, so if you recognise us, say hello. We will be discussing the event on the forums afterwards, so if you attend, sign up and join in.

Don't Blink. We award prizes fast!

Posted by Yaginuma on 09/24/06 04:29 PM

Back in May 2006, VGMusic had a contest to win some free prizes from Lik-Sang. We picked a winner, but he never got back to us. So in our ever so speedy fashion (4 months later), we have awarded the prize to a new randomly selected winner: Matthew Bernier of Torrington, Connecticut, USA! Congratulations! We appreciate Matthew's speedy response! Special thanks to Lik-Sang for their patience with our rapid prize schedule.

Sorry about the delay; I wanted to take care of some security issues first.

Forums and email

You may have noticed that, since Friday, you have stopped receiving watched topic notifications or notifications of new private messages.

This has been fixed.

However, new forum accounts created between Friday and today will need to be re-registered.

Edit: Anonymous posting has been fixed. Sorry, that was my fault.

We're back... again

Posted by Powerlord on 07/28/06 02:15 PM

I'm sure a bunch of you are wondering what happened this morning.

Well, it turns out that things weren't going as well as I thought. When I logged into the system this morning, I found that it had been compromised through a security hole I hadn't noticed yesterday.

I've reinstalled the system and restored from backups to fix the problem. I'm also watching programs more closely as I install them to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Upcoming Downtime

Posted by Powerlord on 07/26/06 11:32 PM

The site is most likely going to be down part of the day Thursday, July 27, 2006 or Friday July 28, 2006 due to system changes.

Uploads have shut down in order to take a complete site backup.

Forums will remain operational until just before the downtime, at which point we will take a final database backup.

Although the downtime is only expected to take a few hours, do not be surprised if it takes longer than that.

Staff Changes

Posted by Yaginuma on 07/26/06 07:37 PM

Powerlord will be returning as co-administrator, with Kurtis (Hunter-Zero) as his fellow co-administrator. (sys-admin/webmastering). They will be taking other responsibilities held by Forte. I appreciate his past contributions! Also please check out Pongball's farewell address in the previous thread below. Now is a chance for some new changes. We will be planning for a transition away from the annoying Ensim system our server currently runs on and will be changing back to Debian. We will also be pushing to construct a new site layout and database to better help vgmusic grow.

Edit by Pongball: Since it wasn't made more clear in this post, John (Forteblast) is resigning too! He didn't want to write his own resignation post, but I think he deserves a big thank you and good bye as well. Thank you for all your hard work as webmaster, John!

It's been a pleasure serving you.

Posted by Pongball on 07/26/06 06:19 PM

As of today, I'm officially resigning from my position on the VGMusic staff. With a large staff changeover on the horizon, I'm very excited about VGMusic.com's future, and I think now is a good time for me to finally step down, knowing that the site will be in good hands. Since Powerlord's departure last summer, keeping the site afloat has been a bit of a struggle for us, and although I've been pondering resignation for quite a while now, I felt that I was needed to help hold things together. Hopefully, that should no longer be the case. As you can see, I've done a lot of last minute work -- things that I probably would have regretted not doing otherwise. I just have one more very minor thing to do, and then I'll be finished and officially retired.

When I was first hired to work at this site 6 years ago, I was only 17 years old. I remember how excited I was to be able to work for the coolest site I'd ever found. While that feeling has never really faded, I'm now an adult -- a woman -- and unfortunately, I can't continue spending the time I once did here. Because of the site, being on the Internet has become almost a full time job for me. I realize now that I need to focus on other things, such as my new life with my husband-to-be (whom I actually wouldn't have met if it weren't for this site). Perhaps I'll even get back to focusing more on my music.

Over the years I've met countless amounts of amazing and talented people at this site. Believe me, I wouldn't trade my experiences here for anything. The other staff members, in particular, have been incredible friends as well as co-workers, and I'm going to miss being a part of the team. Many people from our forums and our IRC channel have also been the greatest friends in the world to me and because of this, I'll still be sticking around as a regular user. So don't be sad, I'm not going to leave completely!

In my 6 years as Updater and Update Coordinator, I've added approximately 7,000 MIDI files to the archive, which is almost one third of the files currently in the archive. I've also done countless amounts of behind-the-scenes work, and spent a lot of time moderating (and enjoying) the forums and the IRC channel. I've submitted around 80 MIDI files of my own to the archive, and helped a lot of people learn to sequence their own. It feels great to be able to look back on things and realize, "Hey, I've made a huge difference." My time at the site was certainly not time wasted (well, maybe it was sometimes... ;)).

I wish the current and future staff the best of luck! I'm counting on you to keep the site going strong!

I finally gave the Links page a long-needed overhaul. I can now understand, more than ever, why no one did it before. That was a lot of work. Anyway, it's amazing how much the video game music community on the Internet has grown since, well, whenever our links page was last majorly updated. There's way more game music related sites out there than I could possibly link to, so many good ones had to be left out. But hopefully this should do. Check it out.

Game Quest: A novel about video games.

Posted by Pongball on 07/18/06 01:18 AM

Recently, an old friend of mine and former contributer to this site, Leopold McGinnis, wrote and self-published a novel about a fictional video game company called Madre Games. The story is loosely based on the real-life game company Sierra Games, and often makes references to a number of real-life games with, er, cleverly disguised names (Crypt Destroyer, Dan Destroyem, Gloom... gee, what games could those possibly be?)

I just finished reading it the other day, and I enjoyed it so much that I feel it's now my duty to give it more recognition. And keep in mind that I'm a person who normally doesn't have the patience for novels. This book was more addictive than the Internet! And speaking of which, it features a sub-plot about a teenage girl who's addicted to online message boards, chatrooms, and computer games. It's also possibly the only novel in existence that features a video game music composer as one of the main characters.

So far, Leopold has only managed to sell 49 copies of the book. I strongly encourage any gamers -- or anyone who likes a good story -- to order a copy of it and support the author's hard work! You can order it via this website: Game Quest Homepage.

This has been a public service announcement.

Edit: Uh oh, seems like the Game Quest website is down right now. You can also get it from Amazon.com.
