  • 2008 Teacher of the Year - The application for the 2008 New York State Teacher of the Year Award is now available. The Teacher of the Year program recognizes and celebrates outstanding teachers throughout New York State.  Eligible teachers are appropriately credentialed, work directly with students in a public, private or charter school and have at least five years teaching experience.  The deadline for applications is February 16, 2007.

  • Use of Technology in Education - The Board of Regents created a statewide Technology Policy and Practices Council to study the use of technology in education.  As part of this effort, the Metiri Group will be conducting random surveys of school districts and other members of the University of the State of New York.  Commissioner Mills urges all selected to participate in the survey process; a letter from him with additional information is available at www.emsc.nysed.gov/metirisurvey.htm.

  • Essential Elements Schools to Watch - New York State is one of 14 states that has joined Schools to Watch, a national recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform. In New York, seven schools were selected for the 2006 group of Schools to Watch by distinguishing themselves in academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organization and structure.

  • Reminder of Annual AHERA Notifications to Employees and Parents - The federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires all schools to provide public notification regarding inspections and other activities related to asbestos. Schools must also make its asbestos management plan available for public inspection.

  • Provision of Special Education Services to Parentally Placed Nonpublic Elementary and Secondary School Students with Disabilities - This memorandum informs school districts of their responsibilities to provide special education services to parentally placed nonpublic school students with disabilities for the 2006-07 school year.

  • October 24, 2006 Press Release - The Board of Regents today recommended a $1.48 billion increase in State Aid to schools for 2007-2008. Most of this funding would go to school districts educating the State’s neediest children.

  • Update: The State Education Department will convene a series of seven statewide forums to solicit public comment concerning revisions to the Board of Regents policy statement on Parent and Family Partnerships. At the June 2006 meeting, the Board of Regents authorized staff to solicit comment and present findings from those public sessions at the January 2007 meeting of the Regents. A final policy revision will come before the Regents for consideration at the February 2007 meeting.

The Department will also be conducting a survey and collecting comments to share with the Regents through January 2nd. Please take a few moments to complete this survey and provide your comments to the Board of Regents. The survey is intended to assess the appropriateness of each component of the revised policy. Please review the materials provided at www.emsc.nysed.gov/nyc/ prior to completing the survey.

  • Summit on New York Education - The State Board of Regents convened leaders from education, business, and community service organizations to confront tremendous educational challenges. We must continue to close the achievement gaps that exist from early childhood through postsecondary education while also raising the performance of the entire system to the level needed to sustain the state's economy in the face of global competition. We have made progress over the last decade, yet the gaps in achievement and productivity persist and impede New York's economic and civic vitality.
