Global Call to Action Against Poverty 2005
In 2005, there will be real opportunities to push governments to make progress in the fight against poverty. At the ICFTU Congress, the ICFTU announced the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, backed by a wide-ranging coalition of groups, which are determined to get governments to take decisive action to reduce global poverty in 2005. The Global Call to Action Against Poverty was launched formally at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre in January 2005.
The ICFTU is calling for worldwide trade union support for the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, which aims to mobilise massive popular pressure for the worlds governments to make significant progress on poverty reduction during 2005. The massive degree of public support and donations to help the victims of the Tsunami bears witness to the potential for people to join together through solidarity in the fight against poverty and hardship, and a similar effort is required at a global level. The ICFTU invites your organisation to support this action by joining your efforts with those of other anti-poverty campaigners in your own countries which are participating in the Global Call to Action Against Poverty.
Why should trade unions be involved?
The central role played by productive employment in reducing poverty is frequently forgotten, and there is a clear trade union role to be played in ensuring this message gets through. Trade union support can make a major difference in getting progress in three areas which are vitally important to poverty reduction:
  • Trade justice
  • Debt reduction and cancellation
  • More and better aid
It is possible that 2005 could offer a real opportunity to make a breakthrough on poverty, because of three significant intergovernmental events which will take place during the year: The G8 summit in the UK, which is expected to have a major focus on development issues (July 2005)
  • The United Nations General Assemblys first 5 year review of progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals in New York (September 2005)
  • The 6th World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong (December 2005)
The coalition behind the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, which includes Global Unions, recognises and encourages the vital role which can be played by trade union organisations at national level in mobilising for more and better jobs and against poverty, and the ICFTU encourages affiliates of ICFTU and other Global Unions organisations to link up with other constituencies which are supporting the call. Several affiliates have already done so.
The international workers day, May 1st, gives trade union organisations an ideal opportunity to take the lead in highlighting the need for government action on poverty. We hope that many national May 1st demonstrations and events in 2005 make a link to the Global Call to Action Against Poverty.
It is proposed that all activities which are part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty worldwide should be linked simply and visibly using the symbol of a white band. The wearing of a white band has been planned as a way for individuals and organisations to demonstrate their connection to the Global Call to Action Against Poverty. For more information about the Global Call, visit www.whiteband.org, and read this article.
Those of you who joined us in Japan for the ICFTU Congress participated in a debate on fighting poverty and the role of trade unions. That debate showed how vital it is that unions and their partners in civil society apply public pressure on governments to let them know that their citizens want to see real progress on poverty and more and better jobs in order to achieve an end to poverty.
