The bad fic and other writing-related ramblings of one Alis Dee.

Alis also draws bad art, which she posts to ShockBOX!. Her original series is *sfaj, but you're probably here for Rabbit Heart (or its meta). You can find her other fic at the AO3, and you can find her elsewhere on Tumblr as alisdee.

I’ve always thought it was Deeply Uncool that spirits in the DAverse get the burt end of the stick when it comes to character designs. I mean, demons get to look awesome. But spirits? Get to look like… some vaguely-transparent guy in armour? (Twice, in fact.) Come on!

Which is why one of the developing themes in Rabbit Heart is what, exactly, the “Black Beast” actually looks like.

The honest answer is that I don’t really know; the original concept looks something like this, though later chapters in RH imply something a bit more Tyrael-esque in the wingaling department. (Somewhat coincidentally, Tyrael is the Archangel of Justice in the Daibloverse.)

Either way, it’s been alluded to in a couple of places that Justice and Vengeance are visually distinct; Anders and Carling talk about Justice as being variously “blue” and “like light”, whilst Penrod’s descriptions of Vengeance are more of the “red and dripping blood” variety. This also probably has a lot to do with why Hawke is less afraid of Vengeance than Anders is: Hawke can see the difference, and apply Cooldow Hugs as appropriate. (One of many self-indulgences in RH is that Vengeance won’t hurt Hawke; the latter having confirmed this empirically at the end of Act 2.)

The Black Beast was always going to get wings. All those quips about Anders’ feathered pauldrons are just too tempting. The fun thing, though, is that there doesn’t seem to be a concept of an “angel” in Thedas; the only references I can find are in meta like the names of certain abilities. Go figure.

And, of course, there’s that whole thing about how Anders is normally associated with cats — specifically housecats and tigers — rather than birds.

Now, if only there was some animal that could possibly combine feline and avian elements together in some kind of plot-meaningful way…
