Welcome to Amsterdam

"A city surrounded by a number of canals"

Cees Nooteboom, one of the most important Dutch writer, defines The Netherlands as "A seafaring nation inside the sea". This sentence perfectly describes the love feeling Dutch people have towards water. Surrounded by a number of canals, Amsterdam, the so called "Venice of the North" and one of the most famous city in the world, is also characterized by such a deep feeling of love.

Amsterdam takes its name from the river Amstel and literally means "Amstel's dam". Cosmopolitan and unconventional city, Amsterdam is located 3 meters under the sea level and is made up by islands, canals and by houses built on piles, whose water supply is guaranteed by an intricate system of dams. The city was born in the 13th century where the river Amstel flowed into the IJ estuary and where the first dam was built. At first, it was a fishing village called "Amstelledamme", which means "dam in the Amstel".

Very fascinating city, Amsterdam is characterized by red roofs, green gardens and canals. Quays floored in porphyry, cast iron streetlamps, the contrast between wood and water, the harmony created by house, everything contributes to making Amsterdam the most beautiful city in The Netherlands.

The city of Amsterdam is best discovered on foot. First of all, the Wester Kerk tower with its wonderful views over the city is worth a visit, then you can walk along quays and streets, cross bridges and discover the smallest corners of this beautiful city, where you can easily find unexpected restaurants characterized by a comfortable and hushed atmosphere.
