Hotels in Crete with on-line availability
Some places are well known thanks to their indisputable fame; others can be reached only by consulting carefully the map and leaving the so-called major tourist routes.
An example is Mochlos, a fishing village that you can reach by exiting the coastal road going east.
Many houses on the sea have been transformed into restaurants, but there are also free beaches and a small solitary cave. It is located in the Mirabello Gulf, between Agios Nikolaos and Sitia.
The beach of Vai, on the eastern point of the island, boasts the only European forest of palm trees with thousands of plants that cover the slopes of a valley to the sea. The beach is equipped with facilities, restaurants and a large parking area. Following along the beach, toward the rocks that enclose the bay, you can find a spot for absolute tranquillity.

Only 4 miles from Vai there is a beautiful beach below the archaeological site of Itanos.
Taking the road leading south you first find Goùduras with its free big beach.
After passing Ierapetra there is Sarkamos Beach with a deserted pebble beach and deep waters.
Kato Zàkros, a beautiful bay with the ruins of an interesting Minoan palace and a spectacular gorge, also has a beautiful beach and taverns shaded in the shadows of tamarisk.
Another beautiful beach just to the south is Xerokambos.
