spacer  The isle of Elba is an island of Tyrrhenian Sea, 20 km from the costal town of Piombino. It is the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. Elba and other islands (Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) of Tuscan Archipelago are protected in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago.

 The island is divided in eight communes, all afferent to the province of Livorno: the main one is Portoferraio, the other Campo in Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana, Porto Azure, Rio Marina and Rio in Elba, for a total of about 30 miles livings, that increase considerable during the summer.

 The climate of the island presents mainly mediterranean features, made exception for the Mountain Huts where the winters stretch out to be moderately cold. The rainfall are concentrated in the autumnal period and result to be enough restrained.

 The emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to Elba, and some villas are left testimony: Villa of the Mills situated in Portoferraio, with a magnificent view on the sea and the summer residence of the past, Villa San Martino rented in the periphery of the small citizen. More recently, the island is well-known (also abroad) for its wine (particularly the random, sweet wine liquoroso from dessert that often accompanies the typical one "crushes Briaca").

 The two large sieges of the half of the XVII century and the battles fought under the wall of the fortress of Longone, gave teaching and valid motive to the Italo-Spanishes for the construction of a defence wall from which was possible to block, with the shooting intercrossed of the guns, any attempt to to force the inlet of Longone and Millstone.
