IRP Registration

spacer The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement among states of the US, the District of Columbia and provinces of Canada providing for payment of commercial motor carrier registration fees.

To operate in multiple states or provinces, motor carriers must register in their base jurisdiction (state or province).

For more information, view the Carrier Training Video.

Registering with IRP

Registering a fleet of vehicles is a one-stop registration process.

To register your vehicle with IRP apportioned license plates, you must contact your base jurisdiction (state or province) for specific information and requirements. Contact information for each IRP jurisdiction can be found in the IRP Directory. IRP, Inc. cannot provide registration information for specific jurisdictions.

You should also contact your base jurisdiction for information regarding:

  • Adding, deleting or transferring vehicles in my fleet during a registration year
  • Changing registered gross vehicle weights during the registration year

Related Terms

  • Base jurisdiction: the state or province where the registrant has an established place of business as defined in the International Registration Plan. If you are unsure what jurisdiction you should be based in, please refer to the Section 305 found on page 27 of the Plan.
  • International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA): inter-jurisdictional fuel tax licenses and quarterly reporting is handled through IFTA. Visit IFTA for more information about fuel tax licenses.
  • Motor Carriers Services: for more information on programs and federal initiatives, visit Motor Carrier Services.

IRP Registration - Fee Estimator

To obtain an estimate of IRP registration costs, use the IRP Fee Estimator, provided to IRP by Celtic.

The Fee Estimator is a tool to help you estimate the fees associated with registering apportioned vehicles based on various factors, including the distance associated with the jurisdictions traveled.

To determine the exact cost of IRP registration, contact your base jurisdiction.
