Seagulls Heading to ACHA South Regional Championship
Attain New Team Best #9 in Final Season Rankings

Thurs. February 9, 2012 -

One year ago, almost to the day, Coach Hammock made this comment about Salisbury's late-season 4-0-0 run to finish the 2010-2011 regular season..."We've done everything that we needed to do to earn a spot [in the post-season]. Now, its just a waiting game."

After falling in a heartbreaking shootout 4-3 to #10 University of Richmond, sentiments in the Salisbury locker room were nearly the same. The shootout loss capped a dramatic late-season run which saw the Gulls win the Rumble in Richmond tournament and go on a 5-0-1 run. In those six games, SU won three games against ranked opponents, #8 Christopher Newport University (6-2 just before christmas), #10 University of Richmond (6-5 overtime last weekend) and #6 Loyola University (5-2 last weekend). The Gulls also dropped two convincing wins on rival Catholic University. The only blemish on that record is this past Saturday's shootout loss.

Fast forward just 4-days later to Thursday evening...Coach Hammock called a team meeting after classes had concluded for the day. Together the team would wait...hope...for a phone call from ACHA Commissioner Rick Kaminski. Little did the team know that early that afternoon, the commissioner called their coach to give him the good news. At about 9:25pm, Coach Hammock called his players together to huddle around his iPhone for the call they had hoped would touch-off a celebration like never before. Shortly after putting the Commissioner on speaker and introducing him to the team, Mr. Kaminski started to tell them the news..."Usually when I make this call, it is directly to the coach only. Its a rare and special opportunity to tell the entire Salisbury team tonight, congratulations!". Then the celebration erupted before the Commissioner could complete his thoughts. What the team didn't hear, what the commissioner previously had asked the coach, "I would like to formally invite you to regionals. Will you accept?". The screams and cheering were all the answer the commissioner needed. Salisbury had just accepted its first bid to the ACHA South Regional Championship tournament in team history.
