First Game To Require 3.42 out?
Official Firmware, PS3 Hacks , 20.09.2010Well that was fast. According to internet reports, it seems the first PS3 game, F1 2010, requires a firmware update of 3.42 to play. If you attempt to decline firmware update then you are returned back to the XMB. Of course playing around with the dumps file (param.sfo?) SHOULD allow us to bypass the firmware restriction.

I have no doubt people will find a way to play 3.42 games on 3.41 or lower. It's not like 3.42 really added any features

I hope this now drives the chase to crack 3.42, seeing as I now find myself updated! But this is a very selfish attitude, and very bad of me.
One thing I find unbelievable is how quickly this has been taken to market. If genuine, this means the image was built, tested and manufactured extremely rapidly.

I doubt anyone will work on 3.42. 3.50 is out tonight in my region I believe so Your hope lies there.

It would be almost impossible to press all the games with the 3.42 firmware and release the game on time.
There is one option, that the firmware is an old version of the 3.42 and the jailbreak killer one is a mod of that version.
But there is nothing solid on that yet...

There could be 2 versions of 3.42... The one the game would have would possibly not contain the patch for the exploit, which would be great for us, but it wouldn't really matter since 3.50 is coming... Maybe everything is already planned >.<

I'm pretty sure by deleting the folder PS_UPDAT you can get pass that firmware check!
someone should give it a try, or I'll try if I get a game requiring it

have confirmation that 3.42 update can be bypassed, and has already been.

That would probably work, assuming there's nothing within the game code itself that runs a hash check on the on board firmware or something.

Actually there isnt anything in the game code itself that checks the firmware of the console. The game has nothing to do with the update system. The console itself checks the game directory for the folder and update file upon starting the game, when an update file is found its checked against the current firmware, if its higher it requires you to install and if not than you never receive any notice of it. Removing the folder or changing the update file to 3.41 will work fine.

This has been confirmed on psx-scene to be false. The guy was either very misinformed or was trolling.

I certainly don't care about this game, but I did win a copy of GT5 from Subway's contest. I should have that arrive right around it's November 2nd release... So I'm hoping by that point the scene has a firm handle on getting around these required updates, lest I have to wait with a copy of the biggest release of the year for the system (if not top 5 all time), with a PS3 in hand, unable to play it :/
Also hoping to have decided upon the best USB microcontroller solution and have it in hand at that point. I don't want to invest in something that will not continue to have the wide support of the scene, and I am having large trouble finding any comparison threads amongst all the options. I suspect in a few weeks time we shall see, as people receive all their originals and clones and knockoffs, which units are best reviewed.
I don't really want to do anything 'illegal', i guess by my terms, but what I would like is to eventually have OtherOS support, support for playing my PSP games on my PS3 (and I don't consider SNES, NES, Genesis, Dreamcast etc, dead systems as a moral emulation issue). I'd also like to see PS2 software emulation again, given my 30+ legit game library that I can't play anymore due to my dead launch day PS2. Oh, and streaming games off the drive should promote better load times. I'd also like better media support (through OtherOS if necessary) for MKV as well as others, and HTFS or other systems... So I don't have to freaking organize my library around my ps3. Ok, so it's a lot, but I have convidence in the scene.

Regardless of this being fake. This will become reality very soon. Sony is super serious about this kinda stuff.

I upgraded my hard drive to a 500gb drive and when you do that you need to be able to have the same or higher firmware and install it. I had read parts of the agreement and using any way to by pass security features, hard or soft or to reverse engineer or make any derivative work of the sony code is against the LICENSE of using sony firmware. So we own the hardware but not the software on our machines.
So we need to be able to create a custom firmware that has no sony code and is not derived from any sony code, yet still plays games in order to do this legally.
I guess the next thing is to see if the games have the license restriction clause or find one that does not, then reverse engineer that game or software
I know this would be hard work and most people will not even want to attempt this, but if we want to be legit, it must happen other wise we are breaking contracts we agreed to. ( I for one will continue using home brew and Linux if we can get it going, even though)

We're fine until 3.50 comes out. Then it's either CFW or no new games since 3.50 will add API calls that aren't in 3.41/3.42. I doubt games will be using those calls for another few months though. Thing is, at this rate, CFW isn't really going anywhere. We need more people who actually want to work on stuff (maybe 5 people in IRC) instead of people who have no idea what they're talking about and want people to do everything for them (everyone who commented on this post).

If they get the JB ported to 3.15 that's definitely one game that could be used to test the theory of the FW check.
