Hot Buttered Rum and Cornmeal: Aspen Times article by Stewart Oksehorn

CARBONDALE — In the earliest stages of Hot Buttered Rum, founding member Erik Yates was playing a lot of flute, along with some clarinet and piano accordion.

Not exactly the way to kick a bluegrass band into gear. But then Hot Buttered Rum never exactly aimed to be a bluegrass band. Nor are they exactly a bluegrass band these days — not with a drummer having been added to the lineup, not with Yates still taking an occasional turn on flute, not when their most recent album, 2009′s “Limbs Akimbo,” is filled with saxophone and the title track dances to a calypso beat and features a percussion break.

Kyle Hollingsworth Band: Brewski Tour

March 8th

With Special Guest Euforquestra

DOORS 7PM SHOW 8PM

Join us from 7p-8p, we will be tasting  Kyle’s Breckenrdige Brewery beer.

String Cheese Incident keyboardist and avid brewer Kyle Hollingsworth heads for the high country of Colorado this March with Kyle Hollingsworth Band to sport the slopes with his BrewSki Tour, featuring a one-time-only craft beer collaboration from Kyle & Breckenridge Brewery on tap at each show. Fort Collins’ Euforquestra will open each night. And because Kyle and Coloradoans love beer, one keg of the collaboration brew will be available for free for the first hour at all shows, while supplies last.

Thirty years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and incredible ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who’ve seen SCI know the band can move from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. “In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we’re not afraid to move in and out of genres,” he says, “and because of that I’ve learned to be creative, not only on stage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to.”

Hollingsworth’s 2009 release, titled Then There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Euforquestra

Eufórquestra is a seven-member unit that relocated to Fort Collins, CO in Summer 2008 after spending five years in Iowa City, IA. The band’s own brand of High Intensity Global Dance Music is a percussion and horn driven blend of modern music that fuses afrobeat, reggae, dub, funk, rock, soca and highlife with traditional sounds from Cuba, Brazil, West Africa and beyond. This is cutting edge music that ignites dance floors across the country with a sound that “explodes, dances and melts in your ear with sheer bliss” (Chris M. Slawecki; www.allaboutjazz.com).

The Aggrolites

March 16th

With Special Guest Mike Pinto

Doors 7pm Show 8pm

The Aggrolites are more than a band they are a movement unto themselves. They carry a banner – one created with their own hands. This banner reads, Dirty Reggae and represents their signature fusion of reggae, soul, grit and determination. For seven magnificent years, this dirty reggae bunch has rolled from city to city, across the pond and up main street USA. They rally the kids, the parents, the students, the cops, the bosses and the drifters. The people come, they relish in The Aggrolites, the dirty reggae and the joy that comes with it all. The liberating rhythms and catchy grooves demand a return trip.

Out of the Los Angeles school of hard knocks, The Aggrolites have earned a PhD in “feel good music.” On the road they educate with the thunder and punch of the reggae drums and bass, the ripping, soulful melodies of the organ and guitars, and Jesse Wagner’s voice – a gift from the heavens, a perfectly intact gift from Otis, Sam, Ray and Wilson.

After eight years of touring the globe, The Aggrolites are proud to reveal their first live album, Unleashed Live Vol. 1. With five previous studio releases under their belt, including recently released Rugged Road, the next logical move for the band was a compilation of their favorite songs recorded live from recent shows at The Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA and The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Unleashed Live Vol. 1 features songs from all four previous studio releases plus a version of The Beatles Dont Let Me Down and Banana by the legendary reggae artist, Roy Ellis.

The Aggrolites are Jesse Wagner (vocals, lead guitar), Roger Rivas (organ), Jeff Roffredo (bass), Ricky Chacon (guitar) and Alex Mckenzie (Drums).

The Aggrolites have shared the stage with Social Distortion, Rancid, Slighty Stoopid, Flogging Molly, 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Dropkick Murphys, Rebelution, Against Me! and Gogol Bordello. They have graced the stages at such notable events as Vans Warped Tour, SXSW, Coachella, Fuji Rock in Japan, West Coast Riot, Open Air St. Gallen, Pohoda Festival, Rebellion Festival, Chiemsee Reggae Festival, Couvre Feu Festival, among numerous others around the world.

St. Patty’s Day Dance Party with Grant Farm

March 17, 2012

Doors  7pm Show 8pm

Grant Farm is a refreshing harvest of a band from the fertile Front Range of Colorado. This much-anticipated four-piece represents the fruition of the efforts of National Flatpicking Champion Tyler Grant, one of the hottest and best-known guitar players on the scene today. Tyler was a member of The Drew Emmitt Band and The Emmitt-Nershi Band from 2005 until 2010 when he went on his own to pursue his calling as a bandleader. In Grant Farm he is partnered with dynamic drummer Chris Misner, also of the Drew Emmitt Band and Bill Nershi’s Blue Planet. The quartet is completed by funky phenom Adrian “Ace” Engfer on bass and the prodigious Sean Foley on keyboards. Grant Farm has established a movement based on their connection to roots music of all kinds, devotion to their fans and family, and their brilliant performances of Rocky Mountain Rock and Roll.

Grant Farm is a band on a mission. Tyler, Chris, Ace and Sean are experienced players of renown in their own right, but as a unit they form a greater whole, and are working hard to grow into the best band that they can be. Members of Grant Farm have been featured on stage with the likes of Leftover Salmon, The String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, The Motet, Head For The Hills, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Dumpstaphunk, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, Keller Williams, Jon Oates, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Disco Biscuits, Abigail Washburn and Peter Rowan.

The seeds of Grant Farm were planted in 2009 by Tyler Grant and Andy Thorn. Tyler was fresh off the boat from Nashville, TN and Andy from Chapel Hill, NC. The duo found themselves in Boulder, CO as members of The Emmitt-Nershi Band, and were eager to showcase some of their original music. The Grant/Thorn duo quickly grew into a bluegrass/new acoustic quartet and were well-received by the hungry Colorado music fans. When Tyler gave his notice to ENB at the end of 2010 he was driven to make a bigger statement with his music so he dusted off his Telecaster, started a conversation with the experienced and equally driven Misner, plugged in, turned up, and watched the sprouts of the Grant Farm concept grow.

With the help of Thorn and stellar bassist Keith Moseley of The String Cheese Incident, the electric Grant Farm started rehearsing in early 2011. Their concerts in Denver, Boulder and the mountains beyond caused a ripple in the local music scene that led to some fine festival plays the following Summer, including Yarmonygrass, Four Corners Folk Festival, Fort Collins Bark n’ Bluegrass, Riverfront, and Harvestival. With a country-disco (Cris-Co), roots-rock, booty-shakin’ jam-tastic concept fully formed, Ace and Sean were brought on board to bring the band into 2012, road-ready and fully capable of annihilating crowds across the country. An eponymous debut CD will be released on Grant Central Records in March 2012; a Winter harvest of fine original music planted and nurtured by the industrious Grant Farm.
