Interview with Duff

Duff Goldman is a baker and food artist who has been described as both audacious and creative. He founded and owns Baltimore's Charm City Cakes bakery, and stars in the hit Food Network show, Ace of Cakes. And now, Duff has added product designer and marketer to his accomplishments, with the introduction of Duff Goldman by Gartner Studios cake baking and decorating products.

Duff has always been interested in food. As a child growing up, the first sign of his interest was when his mother caught him in her kitchen wielding a meat cleaver and watching food personality Chef Tell on television. Duff's love of working in kitchens began at the age of 14 with his first job at a bagel store at a mall. After college at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Duff navigated his way through the culinary world at some of the best kitchens in America, including The French Laundry under chef Thomas Keller, and back in Baltimore at Savannah under chef Cindy Wolf. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America with a degree in the pastry arts, Duff returned to Baltimore in 2000 and founded Charm City Cakes.

As word about his unusual and daring cakes got out, Duff hired staff with more artistic experience than the typical pastry chef, like painters, architects and sculptors. His out-of-the-ordinary team is known for producing highly creative cakes that range from Star Wars characters and vehicles, to a replica of the Stanley Cup, to a working life-size motorcycle, a Hogwarts Castle for Warner Bros. for the premiere of Harry Potter - to thousands of more astonishing creations for everyone from the bar across the street to the NFL in celebration of the Super Bowl.

Today, Duff's work has been featured on Food Network Challenge, Iron Chef America, Oprah, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and more. After a record-breaking 10th season, filming has wrapped on the Food Network's Ace of Cakes and Duff has started production on a new show called "Sugar High" which features Duff riding around the country on a motorcycle, testing and critiquing desserts. The show premieres on Food Network in August 2011. Duff is also opening a second Charm City Cakes on the west coast in Santa Monica.
