Welcome
We hope that you’ll discover what makes the department of English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette such an engaging and stimulating place to study and teach. Ours is a congenial and accessible faculty, and our students, at every level from first year students to Ph.D. candidates, enjoy a similar camaraderie as they explore with us the many dimensions of language and literature.

Though the study of English at UL Lafayette dates from the University’s beginnings over one hundred years ago, the English Department now reflects the diversity, vitality, and rich tradition of today’s studies in languages and literatures. Our faculty have varied interests, ranging from literature to linguistics, folklore to film, creative writing to culture studies, rhetoric to Renaissance art. We prize wide-ranging inquiries, as they signal minds alive to the intellectual ventures of the present as well as the past.

Our Department offers programs of study both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Bachelor of Arts program is flexible in design. Students are given wide latitude to choose their major area courses. Of the eight upper-level courses required in the curriculum, only one (in Shakespeare) is specified. Additionally, with up to a fifth of the courses in the curriculum slotted as electives, students can tailor their undergraduate degree programs to their own personal or career interests: graduate study, law, business, journalism, creative writing, etc.

At the graduate level, the English Department offers both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Though our goal is to produce literary generalists, the program does allow students at both the M.A. and Ph.D. level to concentrate in literature, rhetoric, folklore, linguistics, or creative writing.

We hope that exploring this site will introduce you to our faculty and students, our activities and goals, and our curricula and programs. Should you have additional questions not answered here, please contact english@louisiana.edu, or any one of the faculty in the Department.
