About Us

With a heritage stretching back nearly 200 years, HarperCollins is one of the world’s foremost English-language publishers, offering the best quality content right across the spectrum, from cutting-edge contemporary fiction to digital hymnbooks and pretty much everything in between.

In the UK, the Glasgow-based William Collins & Sons was founded in 1819 and published a range of bibles, atlases and dictionaries, later including classic authors HG Wells, Agatha Christie, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.

The original Harper Brothers Company was established in New York City in 1817 and over the years published the works of Mark Twain, the Bronte Sisters, Thackeray, Dickens, John F Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1987, Harper & Row, as it had then become, was acquired by News Corporation.  The worldwide group was formed following News Corp’s 1990 acquisition of William Collins & Sons.

Today we publish some of the world's foremost authors, from Nobel prizewinners to worldwide bestsellers.

Our thriving children’s business, includes evergreen popular properties Paddington Bear, Noddy and Dr Seuss, while Michael Morpurgo, Darren Shan, Derek Landy and Louise Rennison continue to delight children and young adults everywhere.

HarperCollins is at the forefront of creative innovation in what we publish and how we publish. We were the first trade publisher to digitise its content and create a global digital warehouse to protect the rights of its authors, meet consumer demand and generate additional business opportunities.

And alongside digital developments, acting and thinking “green” is in our DNA; we publish 60% of our books on environmentally-friendly paper. This is one of the biggest proportions among our major competitors in the UK.  We were the first to take our operations carbon neutral and all our electricity is harnessed from renewable sources.

With offices in the US, Canada, the UK, India, China and Australia, HarperCollins has global revenues of over $1 billion every year.  The President and CEO of HarperCollins worldwide is Brian Murray.  HarperCollins UK is run by Chief Executive and Publisher Victoria Barnsley OBE, publishes around 1000 books a year and employs some 850 people in London and Glasgow.

Victoria is also CEO and Publisher of HarperCollins internationally, overseeing our operations in Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa.

HarperCollins is a modern, creative content company, publishing the best material from the most talented writers. Our goal is to attract, to develop and to retain the finest authors and the very best staff.
