Give it to your woman: Sexist washing tag
Today is internatioal women’s day, and you might think that something like unequal rights for women is a thing of the past. But there are still gender stereotypes and sexist people out there in the world that try to put the breaks on gender equality. This is a stark example of that:
Emma Barnett found this tag in her boyfriends pants, she also happens to be the Digital Media Editor for ‘The Telegraph’. Read her entire article about the finding here. |
Kony Video by Invisible Children Sparks Concern
Yesterday a 30-minute video by the Invisible Children organization posted a video that focuses on Joseph Kony, a man the filmmakers call the world’s worst war criminal. It surpassed 11 million views on Youtube. Everyone posted videos about it on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and basically any other social media site. The video itself runs a half an hour and discusses the Lords’ Resistance Army in Africa and how it kidnaps children and turns them into soldiers. And while it tries to raise awareness, it also tries to raise money. “Social media has added a new layer toward charity donations and charity appeals,” said Chris Thetford with the Better Business Bureau. And according to the Better Business Bureau it can be problematic when people click before they think. The charity, Invisible Children refused to be reviewed by the BBB, which they say can be a red flag. However, the charity says they’re simply waiting until they expand their board. They say the limited board is also why they only get a two star rating for accountability and transparency on the Charity Navigator website. Invisible Children has also been getting a lot of criticism online from people who say they aren’t spending enough on their mission, so much criticism that they have set up a special website to address it. “It can be easy to create a film that pulls at your heartstrings and wants you to help whatever the subject is but you still need to step back and do your homework and make sure that your money is going to be used wisely,” said Thetford. The charity is asking people all over the world to gather and put up posters about Kony on April 20th. And for more information about Invisible Children check out the website |

Camping banned in Uptown Circle
Camping is banned from the Uptown Circle. NORMAL–The town of Normal banned camping in the Uptown Circle, but not the freedom of assembly. People will still be able to gather to voice their opinion, but can not stay overnight. Councilman Adam Nielsen said the circle was not built for that. “It’s not really equipped to be an overnight place,” Nielsen said. “The ability to occupy it during the day is fine, people are exercising their First Amendment rights to freedom of assembly and speech.” The ban stems from the Occupy Blono group that set up camp there in the fall of 2011. Councilwoman Sonja Reece said there are other places to camp in the community. “There are numerous places you can express your opinions in the Uptown Circle. There is a process to do that if you do it in an orderly fashion,” Reece said. There will be a $100 fine if the ordinance is broken. |

Deja Vu for the Redbirds in the MVC Tournament
The ISU women’s basketball squad came into this season picked by the MVC coaches to finish in the middle of the pack. They surprised everyone but themselves as they owned a record of 13-5 in the MVC and a second place finish behind Missouri State. The Redbirds were in the exact same position last year in the MVC tournament being the two seed. And this year, like last year, ISU fell to the 7th seed in the quarterfinal round. The Drake Bulldogs defeated ISU in a very exciting game 56-54. Drake’s freshman point-guard Kyndal Clark rushed the ball up court with time running down in the game and put up and converted a left-handed layup to give the Bulldogs the lead for the first time since early in the first half. Coach Glance and ISU elected not to call a timeout after the made basket with only nine seconds left in the game and ended up turning the ball over on their attempt to tie the game. So, the ‘Birds tournament was short live for the second year in a row and senior Katie Broadway ended her MVC career, but not quite exactly her ISU career. The Redbirds will hope to get an invite to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, a tournament that they have been invited to in the past four years. ISU has a young team and will return all their players next year, minus Broadway. Broadway had a great career with ISU and will hope to go out with a bang in the WNIT later this month.

The Lights Turn Off on Broadway
Katie Broadway has played in her last MVC tournament. As a senior, this year was her last year to try and make it to the NCAA tournament. The Redbirds fell short, losing their first game 56-54 to the 7th seeded Drake Bulldogs. Katie Broadway has been the heart and soul of this team, and will be missed greatly by all of Redbird Nation. |
Redbirds Fall in First Round of MVC Tournament for Second Straight Year
ST. CHARLES, MO—The Redbird women’s basketball team repeated history as they fell to the Drake Bulldogs (17-14, 9-9) 56 to 54 in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, this is the second consecutive year the Redbirds were seeded 2nd and lost to the 7 seeded team. Despite 20 total points by senior Katie Broadway, the ‘Birds were not able to stop the Jackie Stiles MVC player of the year Rachael Hackbarth. Hackbarth finished the game with 20 points, while playing all 40 minutes of the game. The Bulldogs stayed even with the Redbirds for most of the first half, until Broadway took control. The Redbirds led at halftime 27-25 and boasted a 17-2 record when leading at half this season. The Redbirds also had a record of 11-4 when scoring first. Redbird-guard Jamie Russell led the team’s defense with five total steals. Her offense did not show up though as she only finished with six points. Head coach Stephanie Glance is in her second year as the Redbird head coach and she is now 0-2 in the Missouri Valley Tournament. Glance said, “I think some of our youth and having not been here before showed up today.” |
