Big Hell – “So you’re really digging Def Jux joints but you want a little bit of a harder sound. Enter Big Hell. They don’t sound like your typical band or hip hop group for that matter, which is refreshing at a time in music where everything sounds like everything or doesn’t quite sound like it’s supposed to.”
HYPERDELIC FYDELITY
Broken Tapes – Broken Tapes draws heavily on Experimental, Rock, and Blues influences. The super heavy and raw trio gets into each other’s heads and creates mayhem infected grooves reeking of swank and soul. Formed in 2011 by guitarist/vocalist/NYC transplant Matt Oliverio (White Hassle),Drummer Tim
O’toole(Red Collar), and Bass/Keyboardist/vocalist Tom Rau (Big Hell), Broken Tapes ignores classification and is just as likely to improvise a 10 minute garage-prog rhythm & noise assault, as they are to articulate a fragile slide guitar infused murder ballad

He writes, produces/make beats, sings, develops artists, vocal coach, engineers, performs, and all around entertains. “I just love trying new shit..” The Real L@ww finds him self always pushing his artistic limits with the developments of his New song concepts and sounds.

Le Weekend – “In spirit if not sound, I’m reminded of Arthur Russell, another studio auteur who recorded his songs in endlessly fragmenting variations. … Brawny and brainy, it’s a treat for fist-pumpers and beard-strokers alike.”
Brian Howe – Shuffle

Airstrip - Airstrip is the new project from Veelee’s Matt Park. They sound like Veelee played through Thurston Moore’s pedal board. With members of some of Chapel Hill’s best bands including Tre Acklen of Gross Ghost, John Crouch of Caltrop and Nick Peterson of Track & Field Recording you get some definite local-supergroup feels from Airstrip.

Bitch – The only electric violin playing, ukulele toting, bass slapping, keyboard tickling… Bitch is a music box of her own. As seen on the film Shortbus, and heard on The L Word and Bitch and Animal. “Bitch’s mouthy wordplay and virtuous electric violin are ferociously hot.” The Village Voice “On stage the politically charged violinist / vocalist is a force to be reckoned with.” Flavorpill, LA
Julia Weldon – Julia is a prolific, New York City-based guitarist, songwriter, and composer. Some of her influences and idols are: Bon Iver, The Dodos, Bob Dylan, Elliot Smith, KT Tungstall, Melissa Ferrick, The Be Good Tanyas, Mirah, Cat Power, and Iron and Wine.

Secret Music – The debut showcases Chase and Dan’s simultaneously sung verses and memorable, untamed pop choruses, which is fueled by heart-pounding synth melodies and magnetic guitar riffs. The vocals for the entire LP were artistically recorded through pay phones receivers, slyly stolen by Chase and Dan from the hustlin’ streets of Bed-Stuy at 4am-the only Secret Music way.
Deleted Scenes – A four-piece indie band from DC, released its first full-length album, Birdseed Shirt, in 2009, fifteen years after meeting in grade school. It was recorded mostly in group houses across the East Coast with producer L. Skell (The Rude Staircase). Pitchfork praised its “thoughtful existentialism and strange, drowsy downers” (8.0 score), and NPR called it “playfully unpredictable and totally infectious.”

Jukebox the Ghost – The appeal of a modern, on the rise indie band like Jukebox the Ghost is simple: They write catchy songs. On top of that, they’re dynamic, skilled musicians. The band’s records are carefully structured, yet wildly diverse affairs. And the live show? Energetic, crowd-pleasing, cathartic. Check them out on David Letterman.
Speak - Four young men that are blending pop and electronic music creating amazing melodies and energetic anthems. Speak will be making three different appearances at SXSW this year.
The Elwins – are a fun indie-pop quartet, whose songs spring from simple and moderately-paced melodies. Full of warmth and subtle tempos, their EP brims with inviting energy through Matthew Sweeney’s clear vocal charms and the nonchalant rhythms provided by Feurd (bass), Travis Stokl (drums) and Nathan Vanderwielen (guitar).

Pearl and the Beard – “New York born trio Pearl and the Beard are not your typical ensemble. Just listen to our premiere of their tune, “Reverend,” and you will see what we mean. Combining cello, guitar, glockenspiel, drums, accordion and multiple vocal harmonies, Pearl and the Beard doesn’t seem to be copying anyone’s style right now. “Reverend” is a perfect example of their zero to sixty music style that gets you tapping your toes and clapping your hands. ” – Filter Magazine
Animal Alphabet – “Minimal electric guitar prickles through, washed over with brooding cello. It’s expansive but also reserved, gaining a sense of size with layering parts. It’s challenging but accessible.” – Independent Weekly
Brett Harris – “Brett Harris is a pop musician from Durham, NC. In late 2007 Brett emerged on the scene with a collection of songs honed on a hand me down tape recorder. With the release of two critically acclaimed EP’s in 2008 he has over fans and critics alike with vintage influences, timeless melodies, and an unforgettable voice. In 2010 he released his debut full-length album Man of Few Words, which was featured by NPR and Paste Magazine and was included in year-end best of lists by numerous blogs. Brett is currently working on his second full length album.”

LADY FEST NC!
EAR PWR – Amidst the goth vibes, freaky drum pattern, and weird vocal melody, you know that EAR PWR are making a conscious effort to create serious-sounding music. EAR PWR’s sound here feels indebted to the Brooklyn outfit Glasser, with the juxtaposition of tribal drum programming against celestial analog synths (Booze’s are homemade) and an ethereal vocalist out front. – Pitchfork
To All My Friends – Astronauts, dirty nails and other more or less important things are exactly what swedish indiefolkpopduo To All My Friends sing about. Accompanied by instruments such as banjo, autoharp, accordion, melodica and guitar they mold beautiful tunes in the storytelling tradition of american folk music and turn it into something of their own, right here and right now.
Girlcrush (featuring Willie Mae Rock Camp program coordinator)- began as one small queer child singing about her crushes into a handheld tape recorder. In 2005, it became a collaborative effort between two friends. In 2008, it became a full band (minus one of the original collaborators, who was too busy for the project), and by 2009 Girlcrush was, once again, drummerless. After a 2 year hiatus and other creative endeavors (including, but not limited to, the Homewreckers), Girlcrush is back and queerer than ever. They like unicorns and pop-punk and are really into playing shows.
Completely Off Balance – Featuring a former Girls Rock NC camper and teen mentor.
Everything was quiet – Former member of Fucking Dyke Bitches/member of Romantic Animal, former member of Up the Down Escalator/Black Butterfly/GRNC ED and volunteer.

Peter Lamb and the Wolves – Saxophonist Peter Lamb had little choice but to like jazz. He grew up in a household where jazz records substituted for TV as entertainment. Over the years, he’s played and recorded with musicians like Ben Folds and with bands like The Fleshtones and now Lamb is the bandleader on his own project for the first time. He brings his swinging, jazz influenced sound to the studio to play live for host Frank Stasio and talk about assembling his quintet called Peter Lamb and the Wolves. – Frank Stacio, NPR
The Tin Pan Band – Tin Pan connotes a world from the past – the most dominant and enlightened strains of American music of the early part of the 20th century – jazz, blues and American popular song. But it would be a mistake to say that Tin Pan is fixed in that past. Rather, it is music created to be enjoyed profoundly and joyously in the present. The band has created a rabid following by playing music that resonates powerfully because its intention is pure – to make people dance, smile and conjure with the spirit of music itself. On their new album, Hound’s Tooth, the band has perfected their sonic vision – effortless, wondrous and festive, feeling much like, as the band describes themselves, Ray Charles and Tom Waits at a Bourbon Street Parade.

Hurray for the Riff Raff – Phil Alexander, the Editor-in-Chief of MOJO named the band the second best band he saw at SXSW 2011 and wrote, “Hurray For The Riff Raff evoke images of a lost America, her strange sepia’d country-folk vignettes, heartbreaking and poignant, provide a safe retreat and a place of freedom from the 21st century for those yearning authenticity and something tangible.”  The Times of London named the band’s self-titled LP one of the top 10 records of 2011, exclaiming that “Hurray For The Riff Raff have a gift for crafting songs in a country-folk style that sound fresh, personal and heartfelt.”
Django Haskins – Described variously as “an intersection of Randy Newman’s gruff flamboyance, Nick Cave’s gothic élan and Leonard Cohen’s pithy wisdom” and “a pop stylist, with a quick lyrical wit and a card shark’s finesse in delivering a hook” Durham, NC based songwriter and author Django Haskins makes mongrel American music.

The Shondes – “Louisa Rachel Solomon’s vocals are strong, nimble and graceful …complex song structures intertwined with direct, inquisitive lyrics…an album rich in saw-tooth guitars, pummeling rhythms and an undeniably anthemic spirit…The Shondes are a twisted carnival film noir come true. ” – Matt Kiser – CMJ

Beloved Binge - “Sitting behind the drumkit, Binge not only sets the rhythm but sings, plays keyboards and plays guitar. Like her own motion, Beloved Binge songs are busy, using shifting rhythm and keys and two different verses sometimes sung at once.” –Bryan Reed, Independent Weekly (Durham/Chapel Hill, NC)

Brainbows – Mind-melting, spine-exercising, vocal-chord-annihilating, incredible punk from some smart people’s basement.

Billy Sugarfix – Sugarfix has made an ineffable mark on the local scene. A montage of his time might note his rambles rocking out as one third of the much beloved Evil Weiner, his jaunts busking solo, his moments crafting pop vocal gems as one half of Password to Larkspur Lane, and even his side business creating custom serenades. That foreshortened list of credits alone would be evidence enough of his energy and drive, but, ever the entertainer, it’s also not the end for Sugarfix. – Carrboro Citizen
Viking Moses – Known for sincere songs that outline love and loss, responsibility and deviance, joy and pain, Massei continues to consider life’s milestones with his latest release. ‘The Conquest Night’ muses on the dangers and delights brought by breaking boundaries and forging new ground. The countryside takes on new qualities as day turns to night: familiar horizons are lit by forest fires, abandoned houses populate the plains and wild dogs threaten ‘The Conquest Night’s’ twilight world. The album’s sound echoes this lyrical focus as playful, dancy beats transform seamlessly into serious grooves. Massei’s commanding voice ebbs from delicate whispers to throaty howls as this diverse, lucid album unfolds into the night air.
R. Mutt (of Embarrassing Fruits) – R. Mutt is the new incarnation of John Neville’s former project, Spaghetti Western. Neville–most often a drummer in the past–loves a good beat and carefully constructed lyrical sketches. Sometimes oblique in angle, R. Mutt finds its sounds in many places, but hopefully remains unmistakably informed by Neville’s home environs in the piedmont of North Carolina.
Mother McKenzie – Mother McKenzie’s haunting Mojave sound treads alongside lyrics that portray everyman pursuits with cinematic gravity. That’s thanks to Las Vegas-native Wyatt McKenzie, whose tender tenor guides the band’s increasingly diverse sound.  These are soul tunes, music furrowing a groove as heavy as it is persistent.  Wyatt’s aura caries reminiscences of rawly western landscapes  — he walks with a cowboy-booted-gait, bears a whiskey-sharp attitude and plays tunes that sound like dust, range and sun.

They are currently in the studio recording what will be their first official release in Spring 2012 entitled “Howling Owl”.

The Onyx Club Boys – This hot new group draws inspiration from cool old music. Gypsy Jazz, to French Musettes, Brazilian Sambas, Swing, and Ragtime. It’s
