Founded in 1995, DE-CIX in Frankfurt is the Internet Exchange that provides direct and settlement-free IP interconnection ("peering") infrastructure to over 450 leading internet providers from 52 countries.

DE-CIX operates the industry's most robust and advanced peering platform. All types of ISPs including broadband providers, content delivery networks, web hosters, and incumbent operators use DE-CIX services to improve their IP performance and lower their IP Transit costs.

Telegeography ranked Frankfurt the No.1 Internet traffic hub in Europe, making the city the perfect spot to establish peering connections. DE-CIX serves customers in over ten data center facilities in Frankfurt, including ancotel, Interxion, Equinix and TelecityGroup.

DE-CIX is strictly carrier neutral and is owned by the eco association - the world’s largest non-profit association for the Internet industry. DE-CIX is committed to serving the Internet community by providing world class Internet Exchange services and professional, friendly and courteous service at all times.

Over 450 customers from 52 countries are creating more than 1.9 Terabits of peak traffic through the public peering platform of DE-CIX Frankfurt. This makes DE-CIX the number one IX when comparing exchange traffic. 

With multiple redundant layer 2 networks spread out over six locations in Frankfurt, DE-CIX offers a highly available switching platform. The amount of traffic exchanged and the high availability of peering are the qualities of DE-CIX our customers love the most.

What is an IX?

In order to understand the concept and benefits of an Internet Exchange (Point), aka IX or IXP, understanding the underlying concept of the Internet can be very helpful.

There is no single organization that is the unique and ultimate source of the Internet. The Internet is built by every Carrier, ISP and Network operator offering Internet access – hence why it’s often referred to as ‘the Network of networks’. In order for the Internet to work in the manner we are all used to, all those individual Carrier, ISP and Network operators need to exchange data, or, put it another way, grant others access to their network. That access is either agreed on a payment basis – for transit/upstream – or on a cost neutral basis, otherwise known as peering.

In order for peering to work efficiently, Internet Exchange (Points) offer a neutral local network where any Carrier, ISP or Network operator can connect and exchange traffic. The IX(P) uses switching equipment to build the local network, by placing equipment in existing carrier neutral datacenters - sometimes in more than one location for redundancy purposes, and uses dark fiber to interconnect those locations.

In order to be truly neutral, the DE-CIX Management GmbH is entirely owned by eco – Association of the German Internet Industry and is therefore ‘owned’ by the Internet Industry.
