YESTERDAY I CRIED...

I received a phone call from Georgeann Grubb, director of the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program.  She said she'd given my book to a young woman in the victims' support group.  When next she came to the group, she said it was my book that finally motivated her to leave her abuser.

When I began writing Silent No More: Speaking Out About Domestic Violence, I did so because I wanted people to understand what really goes on in an abusive relationship that makes it so difficult to leave and stay away.

As I wrote, I came to realize that the writing was also wonderful therapy.  I never imagined, though, how much Silent No More would affect the lives of victims.

Thanks to the Charleston YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program, which purchased over 400 copies of the book, all the women who go through that program receive a copy of Silent No More.

My story is not an extraordinary one; it's not that different from the stories of many women who have survived domestic violence, but that's the beauty of it.  It's one to which most victims can relate, and perhaps more importantly, it's one that ends well.

It shows victims that escaping, staying away, and recovering is a struggle, but that it's definitely possible.  It also lets family, friends and community members know just how much a survivor needs their help before, during and after the escape.

I've come a long way.  Eight years ago I was in a controlling marriage, terrified most days, feeling hopeless and helpless every day.  Today, I'm a published author, the wife of a wonderful, caring man, and the mother of a beautiful baby.

Yesterday, I cried.  Today, I rejoice.
