Here are some tidbits from our jaunt through the Midwest this month. The tour started off wonderfully, with us all in good spirits. Ingrid Elizabeth (from Coyote Grace) joined us. The morning after our second show, we were assaulted by the hotel’s outdoor stereo blasting Steve Winwood. We chose to dance. Ty found herself facing the usual conundrum:
Our search of the gas station’s souvenir section yielded … Continue reading →
There are a lot of dates that we could conceivably use to celebrated the anniversary of Girlyman . There’s the date that we first performed under the name “Girlyman” (Feb. 3, 2002), the date we first arranged “Montpelier” for three voices in a car together (Aug. 1, 2001), the date Doris & Ty met (Sept. 1981). But the date that we most often use is the date that we scheduled our first rehearsal: Sep. 11, 2001. Doris, Ty and I … Continue reading →
Hey everyone! We’re doing something fun for our midsummer Ohio & Kentucky mini-tour. We have Paula Mauro – writer, producer, documentarian, and long-time friend – traveling with us. She’s going to be live-documenting our tour and sending out tour diary updates through Facebook, Twitter, and our website. Did you ever wonder what it’s like to go on the road with us? Now you can get the inside scoop. Find out what it’s like hanging out in the van. Any questions … Continue reading →
Here in Atlanta, we’re already relaxing during our time off. Last weekend, we celebrated Ty’s and JJ’s birthdays, and Ty had one request of me: make the piña coladas. Since we don’t have much breaking news here at Girlyman Central, I’m posting a step-by-step documentation of how to make the best piña coladas I have ever made (or tasted). It takes a little time (and equipment) … Continue reading →
Why are we up this early? Didn’t we just check into our hotel? It’s a long drive from Oklahoma to Atlanta, and someone (me) foolishly told Doris, Ty & JJ that there’s a Whole Foods in Little Rock. This means fresh salads for lunch and an inevitable extra hour on the road. Thus the 6 am van call. A huge thanks to everyone in Norman, OK who came out and made last night’s … Continue reading →
The webcast is only available on-demand for a few more days. Now’s your chance to watch it for the first time (or the twelfth time). After May 10, it’s gone. Click here for more info. Here’s a clip from the webcast of Doris singing “Supernova.”
If you talk to them long enough, my bandmates might tell you I’ve had issues about being a control freak. On tour, this has often manifested around issues such as audio technology (specifically our in-ear monitor system). It’s been a strain over the years, and in the last few months, things have begun to change. I suppose a lot of it has to do with Doris’s diagnosis last fall. After the initial immediate threats to her health and safety appeared … Continue reading →
Madeira-glazed country ham (pictured right, with my hand) I just made this post to see if I can upload photos successfully to the new blog , but I figured I might as well explain what it was. It’s a country ham with a Madeira glaze. I didn’t make it for a big dinner, I just made it for myself. I was eating it for a … Continue reading →
As some of you already know, last week Doris was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Fortunately, due to great advances over the past decade, CML is now a very treatable form of leukemia, with high survival rates (95+%). Doris is currently at Emory University Hospital and will be working with both eastern and western healing modalities. She’s holding up well, coping with the symptoms of the first phase of treatment, but is still understandably in shock. We all are, but … Continue reading →
