Project Name:
Big Shanty Extension
Project No.:
D4030, D4040
Commission District:
District 1
Last Web Update:
December 2011

Project Description:

Cobb County has begun construction on the much anticipated Big Shanty Extension; a two mile long roadway designed to provide significant congestion relief for the northwest sector of Cobb County. Through the partnership of Georgia Department of Transportation, the Cobb County DOT, the Town Center Area Community Improvement District, Kennesaw State University and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Phase I began construction in January 2010, Phase III began construction in fall 2009 and Phase II is scheduled for construction in 2011. The total project should be completed by Fall 2012.

In 1998, the Town Center Area Community Improvement District, in an effort to relieve congestion on both Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway, began studying the possibilities of a new east/west corridor. Re-connecting the original Big Shanty Road, split by construction of I-75 in the mid 70’s, became the most viable alternative. The Big Shanty Extension project was developed and divided into three phases:
Phase 1 – Barrett Lakes Blvd east to George Busbee Pkwy (under I-75)
Phase 2 – Chastain Road east to Barrett Lakes
Phase 3 – George Busbee Parkway east to Chastain Meadows

When completed the project will provide an alternative to the congested Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway corridors.  The Big Shanty improvements will also include a multi-use trail on the entire length of the project providing a safe pedestrian environment for employees, Kennesaw State University students and visitors in the Town Center area.  The length of the project is 1.98 miles at a construction cost of $18,000,000.

Project Schedule:
Phase I is currently under construction and let to construction by the Georgia Department of Transportation and is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2012.
Phase II is currently under construction with a scheduled completion date of July 2012.
Phase III is substantially complete and open to traffic.

Project Name: I-75 at Third Army Road Interchange
Project Numbers:
D4260
Commission District:
District 1
Last Web Update:
October 2011

Project Description:
The purpose of this project is to provide safety and operational improvements, and reduce traffic congestion on those roads that feed traffic from northern Paulding County, Southern Bartow County and northwest Cobb County to and from I-75.  Currently, commuters use US 41 and SR 92 predominately to gain access to the interstate system. SR 92 crosses Lake Allatoona and goes through historic Acworth.  It would be difficult to widen SR 92 to accommodate this traffic.  Due to congestion along these corridors, commuters are taking alternative routes to gain access to the interstate including perceived short cuts through communities.  This has created safety and operations issues as well as congestion on facilities that were not designed to accommodate this degree of traffic.

The Third Army Road project will address these issues by creating a access controlled roadway between US 41 and a new interchange on I-75 that basically follows the existing Third Army Road, hence the name of the project.  This new facility will provide direct access to the area as described above with the new interchange on I-75. A grade separated interchange with US 41 is also being considered to further alleviate potential congestion on US 41.

Project Schedule:
Currently, only the scoping phase is underway with a duration of approximately 18 months.  The deliverables of this phase consists of an approved Environmental document and approved concept.  Upon completion of this Phase, construction plans will be prepared and the project let to construction.  It is anticipated that construction will begin by 2017 and will take two years to complete construction.

Project Manager Information:
For additional information on this project, please contact the project manager Mike Cates at 770-420-6659.
