In 2008, Woking Borough Council and Surrey County Council were awarded a grant of 1.82 million to deliver 'phase one' of the Cycle Woking project.

Funded through Cycling England, Woking successfully beat 74 other applicants to become one of only 10 towns, plus one city, to be awarded Cycling Town status for three years.

Throughout this phase and continuing on today, Cycle Woking has two overarching aims - to connect people to places and to get more people cycling (and walking), more safely, more often, especially for short journeys.

Key targets

From July 2008 to March 2011, Cycle Woking delivered:

improvements and extensions to the Woking Cycle Network (now known as the 'Planet Trails')
widening and resurfacing works along 12.9km of the Basingstoke Canal towpath and improved links with the Borough's neighbourhoods
increased cycle parking at all train stations, local shopping areas and community facilities across the Borough
increased activities and cycle clubs within schools ensuring all children have access to National Cycle Training (Bikeability).

Together with the other Cycling towns across the Country, Cycle Woking pledged to save 16 million car journeys a year and create an extra 47 million cycle journeys.

In Woking, the scheme aimed to:

increase cycling in primary schools from 4% to 8%
increase cycling in secondary schools from 10% to 15%
increase cycling by commuters to railway stations by 50% on 2004 levels
increase general cycle journeys by 40% on 2004 levels.
