DJ's Distractions
When Dogs Run Free...
...Or, more specifically, where dogs can run free.
Friends of the Arcata Marsh have put together a cheat sheet for northcoast dog walkers.
From Trinidad to Shelter Cove and points between, the brochure details not only what kind of restrictions may be in place, but what kinds of wildlife you might encounter along the path.
Hard copies of the brochure area are available the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center and at Arcata City Hall.
This Exists: Disco Fever
Starring Casey Kasem as the manager and one-hit-wonder Fabian as a fallen pop star, Disco Fever includes a jumbo jet-based disco, scandalous agents, and all kinds of inappropriate dancing.
Spoiler Alert: This trailer basically reveals the entire plot, even the dramatic conclusion.
Bonus round: the 1979 Disco Dancing International Finals.
Easy Money
There are over 100 scholarships available for local students pursuing higher education, says Cassandra Wagner of Humboldt Area Foundation.
She stopped by KHUM to talk about how they've streamlined their scholarship application process.
Some scholarships are specific to certain local schools. While many of these are based on GPA, financial need, or community service, they also have some oddball money for students pursuing, say, the field of professional horseshoeing.
Here's the breakdown:
- Fill out this one application form
- Your application is then compared to the available scholarships
- If there's a match, you're off to the races.
The deadline is March 15th, so get on it.

Coastal Currents: Sunken Stories
Today we speak with Chuck DeWitt, who's been working with Veterans For Peace on restoring The Golden Rule, a historic sailing vessel that protested nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
Before sinking in Humboldt Bay, the Golden Rule had a storied career:
"This little ship was sailed by four brave crewmen, led by Albert Bigelow, in an attempt to stop atmospheric nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands. They were boarded by the US Coast Guard, arrested, and the boat towed back to Honolulu, twice."
Unusually Emphatic Hail Advisory
Via our weather-predicting friends over on Woodley Island:
“This is an urgent winter safety message for motorists from your National Weather Service in Eureka.
“Small hail is expected this morning along Highway 101 from Eureka to Crescent City. Small hail can quickly accumulate on roadways resulting in very slippery conditions.
“Motorists should slow down and make sure their headlights are on. If driving on a hail covered road, go easy on the brakes and steering wheel to avoid a spin out. Instead, ease off the gas pedal to slow down gradually.”
In Studio: Ivan Rosenberg with Chris Coole
Partially famous and wholly talented ex-Humboldter Ivan Rosenberg performed live on Mike Dronkers' program Friday, February 24th.
In addition to decidedly non-shreddy, highly melodic acoustic music, Rosenberg talks about his time as a Humboldt Ultimate Frisbee athlete, how Jimmy Buffett got him to Montana, and why it's fine to zone out to his music.
