Arts & Letters Annual Prize Contest

Submissions are now open for the Arts & Letters Annual Prize Contest in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Entries entitle contestants to a full year subscription to the Arts & Letters print journal (spring 2012 AND spring 2013) as well as a free download of Arts & Letters PRIME 1.2 once it launches. Submissions for the PRIME Poetry Prize are now closed. Alice Friman will be selecting poems from the winning entry to discuss in an exclusive episode of her web show Ask Alice appearing in PRIME 1.2 in March 2012.

The 2011 Arts & Letters Prize Winners Announced

Each year, Arts & Letters brings our prize winners to the Georgia College campus for a weekend of readings, craft discussions, and celebration. In spring 2012, these visits will occur during the Arts & Letters Festival, March 15-17, 2012. Visitors welcome!

Ask Alice

We've asked our poet-in-residence Alice Friman, author of the recently published Vinculum from the LSU Press Poetry Series, and The Book of the Rotten Daughter from BkMk Press, to start a bimonthly web show about poetry, creative writing, and the writing life in general.

Ask Alice is an interactive web series. Alice invites you to submit questions about writing, which could become the subject of the next show! Look for other ways to participate in future Ask Alice presentations.

In Ask Alice #2: "Poetry Has Given Me More Than I've Ever Given It," Alice Friman tackles the questions: How have you changed as a poet over your life? Do you think it's necessary to sometimes let those moments when you feel immobilized by the despair of it take over? She also reads "Carrion Comfort" by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Josh Rolnick, winner of the 2002 Arts & Letters Fiction Prize, has won the John Simmons Short Story Award, selected by Yiyun Li.

Allan Peterson, winner of the 2006 Arts & Letters/Rumi Prize in Poetry, won the 2009 Chapbook Prize from Bateau Press for his manuscript, Omnivore.

Lee Martin, a former contributor to Arts & Letters issue 22, has a new novel, Break the Skin, which came out from Crown in June 2011.
