House, Gardens and Grounds

Bowood House, family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne, was built during the eighteenth century to the designs of Henry Keene and Robert Adam.  The Chapel and the famous Terraced Gardens were added in the nineteenth century.  Important rooms include the Adam Orangery and Library, Dr Priestley’s Laboratory where oxygen was discovered, and the Sculpture Gallery.  There are fine collections of paintings, watercolours, sculpture, porcelain, Victoriana and Indiana.

This magnificent Wiltshire stately home stands within one of ‘Capability’ Brown’s most beautiful parks, with gently sloping lawns stretching down to the lake and distant views to the chalk downlands.  Delights within the park include the Cascade, Doric Temple, Terrace Gardens, Rhododendrons Walks and for children, the fantastic Adventure Playground!
